Publisher's Summary

An Instant National Bestseller

Winner of the 2022 Booker Prize, The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a searing satire set amid the mayhem of the Sri Lankan civil war.

Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali. He has seven moons to contact the man and woman he loves most and lead them to the photos that will rock Sri Lanka.

Ten years after his prize-winning novel Chinaman established him as one of Sri Lanka's foremost authors, Shehan Karunatilaka is back with a "thrilling satire" (Economist) and rip-roaring state-of-the-nation epic that offers equal parts mordant wit and disturbing, profound truths.

this book grew on me

at first I didn't want to read another cynical and overly sexual male protagonist. i am so over that trope even when it is made slightly different by making the protagonist a cynical gay instead of a cynical straight. but this book really grew on me.

in the end, this book is something completely different than anything else I have ever read. it really is a mix of genres like the reviews say, but it works. and it's not gimmicky. it is actually very well thought out. the characters are more complex than they appear in the first few chapters. the gambling metaphors get a bit much at times but not so much that it is distracting or off putting, just noticeable.

I will gladly read more from this author.

the narrator was fantastic, skillfully doing multiple accents and the voices that were meant to be scary were actually REALLY SCARY.

A mystical other world whodunit

Beautifully narrated book. A fantastical voyage in the afterlife as the titular “you” Maali tries to figure out why he was suddenly dead. Ghosts and victims and mystery and unrequited love. And amazing novel made better by a spectacular narration.

Very well written and wonderful book

I learned a lot from this book. I didn’t know much about Sri Lanka and the history of South Asia in general. The period from 50s to 80s is a disgrace for many developing or post-colonial countries and apparently Sri Lanka was no exception. I am amazed by the way the author displayed the atrocities of all sides as well as his love for his country and people, which I believe was not easy to do in a society with several great divides. I wish the book had come with an accompanying PDF to make it easier to follow the names and Sri Lankan words. That is why I gave one less star from the overall aspect. Having said that, it was great that the Author chose to use actual names and events because regardless of what the book says as a fiction, it gave me opportunity to learn about political events, leaders, assassins and even Vedda people. The whole concept of afterlife and so on was a great salute to their culture and the culture of the island in general. It was a great experience to read this book and I am grateful to find it. Hope many more people read it and I hope all nations have at least one Author like Shehan Karunatilaka who writes with a true love for his culture and people.

Absolutely brillian narration

Mesmerizing worlds intertwined with great dialogs and dark humor. A story that was both enlightening and captivating, kept me hooked from the beginning to the end

Wonderful story with great narrator

Loved this book…. Afterlife depicted as a cross between Dante’s “Inferno” and “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”’s depiction of bureaucracy. A dark comedy set in a troubled land while the narrator’s accent constantly kept you “in situ”.
