Holly Craig offers a fairly clever story about a sketchy husband taking his family on the lam after a neighbor's murder. The author's exploration of a dissatisfied mistreated wife + her affairs/forbidden friendships is conducted well, but characters like her skeezy hubby and 2-dimensional children are essentially ignored. Added to that is a plot - eventually involving life on a sex-cult island somewhere in the Australasian Pacific - so implausible that I couldn't suspend disbelief.

I certainly can't blame a "meh" impression of the book on performance, however. Reader Tamala Shelton turns in a fantastic performance. She tends to take breaths at inopportune times (with a limited lung capacity like that, I wonder if she's a smoker).. but Audible Studios (Australia) Inc. cast this project wonderfully. If given the option between a text version of the book or this recorded iteration, choose this one every time.

Altogether, 'The Shallows' belongs in the "included with your subscription" catalog. The 6/10-star audiobook was a reasonable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons, but not worth a Credit should they ask for one.
