Publisher's Summary

Upon returning to Valia after his journey to Caelford and the Unclaimed Lands, Corin Cadence is confronted with a familiar foe—his own father.

While his strength has vastly increased since his last encounter with Magnus Cadence, Corin knows that he’ll need every trick at his disposal—and maybe a few new ones—if he wants to survive a duel with his father intact.

While Corin struggles with his family, his friends must face a second year at Lorian Heights with new classes, familiar but new chancellor, and deadly new enemies both on and off the campus. But school itself is the least of their worries. As the year progresses, the nation of Valia faces new travails at the emergence of a mysterious faction targeting attuned commoners and foreigners.

Casualties mount as Corin’s allies seek to unmask the leadership of this deadly order—and discover a threat that they cannot hope to face and emerge unscathed.

The Silence of Unworthy Gods is the fourth book in the Arcane Ascension series, a progression fantasy epic that mixes dungeon crawling and magical school content. This book also references events from the Weapons & Wielders series up to Book three, a connected series that takes place several years earlier with some overlapping cast members.

A return to form!

I was very critical of the previous book in this series. It didn’t advance the plot or develop the characters in any significant way. I feel the author acknowledged the feedback and took it to heart for this book. Bravo!

Specifically, I loved how the author wrapped up the subplot with the main character’s father. It was clever and provided sufficient closure for me.

I am very happy with the book. As always, Nick Podehl’s performance is top notch.

If there is one critique I have, it’s that I’ve been reluctant to invest and listen to the other books in the adjacent series. In an AMA on Reddit, the author mentioned that he doesn’t do much “planning” and I perceive that the web of plots he is creating may never resolve. I hope that is not the case.

4.5/5 ★

another great installment of this series! if you're reading this you've probably already read the other previous books and know what you're in for.. and book 4 does not disappoint! There's definitely no fall-off in quality of writing, and the narration per usual is excellent!

strong story

his earlier books could be a bit weak, but the delivery of this one was superb. strong and not afraid. would recommend if you are following this story.

the beginning of the audible does have glitches. could do with some more editing for chapt 1.

Another great book in the series

Another great entry in the series! The way what started at the very end of Book 3 is concluded is *chef's kiss* and most definitely Corrin.

Plenty of other exciting stuff happens too, not everything is sunshine and rainbows either and the book concludes as it should, leaving me wanting more.

Narration is fantastic as usual. If you have never heard a Nick Podehl narration, you owe it to yourself. You won't regret it!

good but not as good as the previous books.

it was another well written installment but I found parts overly complex and hard to follow especially when explaining attunement science. I also found it overtly preachy at times.

Another great sequel

I enjoyed the book from start to finish. Even the slower parts of the story were pretty good because you're enamored with the characters and their actions. I like the fact that the author acknowledges there are socio-political issues too many fantasy authors ignore or don't explore that aspect in the world they are creating. Got a bit preachy at times but overall handled well.
