Story
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

A Different kind of story
I listened to a lot of suspense novels, and this was a nice change of pace. It kept me engaged, and even though there are a lot of people in the story, it's easy to follow. I'll definitely be checking out her other novels!

A lot of characters
A bit convoluted and hard to follow. There were 25+ characters in the story so listening made it a bit difficult to follow. I did enjoy the performance by the narrator.

I Really Enjoy Anni Taylor Books
I was out of credit and decided to get a free book. I would never have picked this genre but I'm so happy that I did. I'm now on my 3rd Anni Taylor book and loved each one. I loved the style of writing I love the performance. Just when I think something's gonna go one way it goes another. I would highly recommend Anni Taylor

Ab-so-lute-ly brilliant!!!!
Very fresh original story, the best narrator I've heard so far on Audible - this book is a must if you like detective stories. Wasn't all that impressed by earlier books, but this one is a strong 5 out of 5. Well done!

Got too deep to stop listening - but then I had to
I don't normally take the time to write a review, I will use the stars and call it a day, but for this one... I just have no idea what complete nonsense I just listened to for the better part of a day. I finally had to stop with just over a hour to go, I simply could not take one more minute of this convoluted storyline. I would write more, but I can't possibly give this book anymore of my time. it's a shame, because there have been a few pieces by Anni Taylor I have really enjoyed, but this is unintelligible, go ahead and pass on this one.

Good story but 100% predictable
From the moment you start listening you know about 85% of what’s going to happen and how the story is going to play out. No twists no surprises it’s literally an 8 year old wrote story line. It’s an interesting story but it’s nothing special. Don’t waste your time unless you just need something to listen to. I’m really happy this is over and I can move on.

Predictable
This sounded like it would be right up my alley. Unfortunately it was only mediocre. The first half was a good set up with challenges and hidden passages.
Then the second half, the most predictable story I've endured. Full of cliches and trying to make it a thriller. That ended up making it seem like a corny 80's action show.
That said, the narrator was pretty good. I couldn't tell if she was American or Australian. I've listened to a lot from the UK and Australia.

Interesting book
This book very much gave me Squid Game vibes. That all went away at the end of the book. They book started out slow and got confusing. You need to pay attention to the titles of the chapters to understand what story they are sharing. There are 3 different stories/perspectives. I didn’t realize that until I was 1/2 way through the book and confused.
The book was interesting and had some plot twists that I did not see coming. I would recommend this book.
