Publisher's Summary

Audible's 2014 Narrator of the Year Julia Whelan performs one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, The Snow Queen. This classic tale is a fantastical fable of two dear friends - one of whom goes astray and is literally lost to the north woods, while the other undertakes an epic journey to rescue him. This charming, strange, and wonderful story is a timeless allegory about growing up and the challenges of staying true to one's self, and it served as the wintry inspiration for the blockbuster hit Frozen.

Strange & Fascinating

A Christmas/Winter freebie treat from Audible. Beautifully narrated by Julia Whelan. If you are like me and find fairy tales a deep and often scary labyrinth--this story won't disappoint. Seven short tales that connect in the end and captivate. Written in1844--this is a true classic which examines perception, point of view and constancy. A winner without question. Short, sweet and to the point.

Snoozzer

This is not seven connected stories, it is seven chapters. It was also quite the snoozer. It may be free, but it is a waste of time.

Narrator of the year?

Was surprised that the narrator was considered by Audible "Narrator of the Year." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was amazed that she would pronounce the Danish/German name of one of the protagonists so horribly (Kai sounds like "Ky," not "Kay"). It's a pretty common name. I was able to double-check this within a minute of googling, so it It bothers me that this is often an issue in Audible productions--I'm not sure why it isn't considered important to the narrators--or even that Audible would check on that sort of thing. Not like they have to pronounce everything perfectly--but I'd like to think Audible would care a little more! Shouldn't this be a standard?

This is a classic tale.

This story, like many other fables, is unusual but is not as dark as some. Although the two characters are separated for sometime by the wants of others, the two are able to reunite and live happily thanks to the perseverance of the lead character.

Couldnt get into it!

Some of the free Christmas books Audible has offered have been interesting but this one was not one in my opinion. I guess I am too old for fables! It was torture to listen.

boring

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better story.

Has The Snow Queen turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes, the style of writing was not for me.

How could the performance have been better?

Yes. the performance could have been better but it was influenced by my response to the book.

Any additional comments?

I finished it because it was a free book. I would not pay for this book.

Nice!

It was a great story. We should all keep a child in our hearts. I have a 10 year old boy in mine. He laughs after faring and laughs when someone says Uranus.
