Publisher's Summary

This unique and fundamentally liberating book shows us that examining our attitudes toward money - earning it, spending it, and giving it away - can offer surprising insight into our lives, our values, and the essence of prosperity.

Lynne Twist, a global activist and fundraiser, has raised more than $150 million for charitable causes. Through personal stories and practical advice, she demonstrates how we can replace feelings of scarcity, guilt, and burden with experiences of sufficiency, freedom, and purpose. In this Nautilus Award-winning book, Twist shares from her own life, a journey illuminated by remarkable encounters with the richest and poorest, from the famous (Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama) to the anonymous but unforgettable heroes of everyday life.

Great information and message.

Really loved the message of this book but the person reading it was hard to listen to for so long. Her voice wasn't overly energetic or inspiring and became boring over time. Had to really push myself to finish because of this.

Enjoyed content, not narrator

Listening to this book makes me want to read it. Although the content was great, I had a difficult time connecting with the narrator.

A new perspective on the way I think about money

I loved this book to shift my perspective of money and life. Understanding that there is enough and learning to live from a place of sufficiency instead of scarcity is very freeing.

Important perspectives for our times

Riveting story and perspectives. Loved it. I have heard Lynne Twist in podcasts and conversations. The passion and nuanced depth of her voice was not well represented in the performance. The content however is stellar!

You will not regret it!!!

Lynne brings an incredible perspective to the world and soul of money. She has worked with the richest and poorest people in the world, has helped folks from other cultures learn about our financial system, and has seen the power and horrors of what people can and do with their money. Her beautiful mesaging to use money as a tool to express your highest potential (your soul if you will) is built on a very powerful argument with many life experiences, including her own. Do it!!!

Very good book. It's not just about money

I enjoyed this book because it made me understand the meaning of sufficiency and provided an in depth look on how money and its many uses can make or break societies.

Terrible Reader

The reader over pronounces her words in a way that no one talks, and it was very distracting. No emotion, almost like listening to the news for hours. I kept tuning the book out and after being halfway though, decided to call it quits. The content was probably great, but the reader was too distracting for me to actually listen to what they were saying.

Excellent message

This book was so good, I’m glad I didn’t listen to the other reviewers who seemed to be triggered by the readers voice. I almost didn’t get the audible version because of these reviews. I am so glad I did get it. The reader did not bother me. The message is powerful! Perhaps the reader is over annunciating because there may be people listening who’s native tongue is not English. I thought the book and message was so great. The readers voice was fine to me.
You should get this and if you stopped listening because you were triggered by the readers voice I’m sorry for you, you’ve really missed out... hope you got the book!

Preachy narrator

The message of this book was good but it got a little redundant and preachy towards the end and the narrator made it even worse...she sounds like the strict goody goody teacher you always dreaded in school. I would prob not recommend this audible to my friends.

Really bad narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not- I tell them the content and message of Lynn Twist's book may be valuable, but its hard to get it with the annoying narration. I am planning to buy the book in print so I can actually absorb it.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lynne Twist? Why or why not?

Only with a different narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Cynthia Barrett’s performances?

Never- this narration was excruciating to listen to- it literally made me cringe.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to many audiobooks while commuting 15+ years and this narrator was like chalk on a blackboard. She was painfully over-articulated and her tonality was just plain strange. It come off very pretentious and made the content seem insincere and self indulgent when I am not sure that is the spirit in which the book was written. I saw other comments and thought I could still enjoy the content while tolerating the narration but not so.

Helped me redefine my relationship with money.

Good book with some really great points. Sometimes it's gets a little too flowery for my taste, but it never really lost my attention.

Definitely worth listening to!

How much is "enough"?

The concepts are almost mind-blowing in their simplicity and yet are completely life-changing. The concepts of "enough", "you AND me instead of you OR me" and changing huge cultural norms by not accepting "the way things have always been done" and committing to change, definitely shook me out of my current lazy assumptions about money. It's a little idealistic, but that is possibly due to her own background of never having had to struggle for money.

On the negative side, the narrator is a horrendous over-enunciator and makes the author sound like a self-righteous snob in some parts of the book, simply by the snooty way she reads it. If you have the choice, I would recommend reading this one instead of having it read to you. I think that the author's warmth and sincerity would come across much more clearly in the printed form.

Bottom line: I'll definitely recommend this book to people. First in line is my brother-in-law, a financial planner.

Which is worse? Preachy Writing or Bad Narrator

What would have made The Soul of Money better?

Narrator was intolerable; cloying snobbishness in her delivery, holier-than-thou turns of phrase...could barely force myself to continue listening

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cynthia Barrett?

Someone with more natural conversational style / less pretentiousness

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyed... the author is already going in too many unfocussed directions preaching and showing off, but the pretentious narration lends the possibility that the author sounds like this, too. (which I have no way of knowing)

Any additional comments?

Not a very interesting contribution, in the end, to the ideas the book purports to address

Life changing

There are not enough words to describe how wonderful this book is. It took me 38 years to understand that money has a soul, a life force and that we get to assign that life force to money. I was assigning "not enough" and that's exactly what I got. I'm working with myself to heal years of incorrect beliefs about money, and this book helped. Thanks Lynne. What an inspiring motivational book.
