I have always enjoyed the rat

I read the first book when I was in high school and unfortunately was not smart enough for a life of crime!

Funny and brilliantly narrated

I came across these books many many years ago and spent the following decade trying to find all of them in print. Now, I find that all of the Stainless Steel Rat books have been made into audio books. That alone would have been enough for me. However, I have to draw attention to Phil Gigante's performance. It is so perfect for the tone and content, like listening to some 1960s slim-tied Martini-swilling retired super thief recount the crazy escapades of his youth.

Now, I need to point out that these books are in no way high-concept speculative fiction. They are wonderful examples of retro-futurism, showing an early 1960s idea of what a star-spanning civilization would look like with all the weird assumptions that come with it. For example, how weird is the idea, now, of a future that is still a cash-based economy? So, strap on your recoilless pistol and be ready to slap the surly robot for not bringing your drink fast enough!

amusing enough

Older sci fi with the usual issues. The main character has some fun traits but this won't be a book I listen to time after time.

Entertaining but archaic sci-fi

I rather enjoyed the sci-fi pulp fiction style with humour. Some ideas of the future made me smile (like coal fired robots, or changing a space ticket by punching different holes). But the heavy sexism was quite tiring and made it a bit hard slogging at times.

Let down by the reading

I've read this book, on paper, several times. I like it. It's a fun adventure story. Unfortunately, the narrator reads every sentence with a sneer. There's no natural up and down to the rhythm of the narrative, just always going fill speed and tense. I struggled to get through it. I won't be getting any of the others in the series because of this.
