A Diverting Compendium

As in all collections of this type, the 17 short offerings in this book are hit & miss. All are stories from recognized Marvel authors who know their subject matter intimately; all are written from the unconventional perspective of the supervillains (don't buy this expecting to hear your heroes constantly conquering baddies); and all immerse readers into the Comic universe..

On the bad side of the ledger, a couple of stories are ludicrously juvenile (e.g."The Painter Of A Thousand Perils: Private Exhibition" ); a couple are headshakingly bad (e.g."The Ringmaster: If Wishes Were Horses"); and a couple are straight-up boring (e.g."Dr Doom: Doom Squared"). Additionally, several of the authors take themselves and the "villain" mandate much too seriously - none of the entries are gory/violent, but some of the stories are awfully dark.

Fortunately, other stories are cleverly-written (e.g."Kang The Conqueror: To the Victor"); action-driven (e.g."Super Skrull: All Creatures Great and Skrull"); or thought-provoking (e.g."Magneto: Connect The Dots"). As I said - Hit & Miss.

Angelo Di Loreto does a nice job reading these stories. His timbre and cadence are professional. Diction, emotiveness, and pacing are commendable. The most notable deficiency: his tone is much too serious for the subject matter (Di Loreto fails to take his cue from Stan Lee's lighthearted introduction).
Still, the narration in this product is distinctly above-average. Additionally, the production standards from Marvel Audio are typically excellent.

Taken in the right frame of mind, this enjoyable collection of Marvel tales from an unusual perspective is worth 5 stars out of 10. It merits a Credit. It's a reasonably good listen for an adult comic book geek like me.. ideal for a long drive or to consume while working a boring night shift, but is likely too sombre for kids.
