Publisher's Summary

In Danielle Steel’s epic new novel, the lives of four generations of women in one family span fortune and loss, motherhood, tragedy, and victories.

From the glamorous San Francisco social scene of the 1920s, through war and the social changes of the ’60s, to the rise of Silicon Valley today, this extraordinary novel takes us on a family odyssey that is both heartbreaking and inspiring, as each generation faces the challenges of their day.

The Parisian design houses in 1928, the crash of 1929, the losses of war, the drug culture of the 1960s - history holds many surprises, and lives are changed forever. For richer or for poorer, in cramped apartments and grand mansions, the treasured wedding dress made in Paris in 1928 follows each generation into their new lives, and represents different hopes for each of them, as they marry very different men.

From inherited fortunes at the outset to self-made men and women, the wedding dress remains a cherished constant for the women who wear it in each generation and forge a destiny of their own. It is a symbol of their remaining traditions and the bond of family they share in an ever-changing world.

Typical Danielle Steele

I purchased this book as I love Danielle Steele. After listening to the book, I realized that her books are all the same. Pretty much same story line. Not sure if I will get another novel from her or not.

Drags, Slow, Always Anticipating but Never Comes

Always seemed like it should be more exciting, like something was about to happen. But this book was like lunch bag let down multiplied, every time you thought something was going to happen it never did. A very flat story that took an eternity to get to "The End"

Overall Great Story

Great book by Danielle Steele and good performance by Todd McLaren.
The author had you fall in love with characters and pulled at your heartstrings with twists & turns that are unexpected - a very easy listen. My biggest complaint is that the narrator had a tendency to make the women in the book sound whiny, often in times where they were supposed to sound strong. Other than that, his voice is very soothing making this easy listen a very enjoyable one!

No change

By listening to this Danielle Steel book it reminded why I stopped reading her books many many years ago when much younger. Her rudimentary grade school style of writing hasn’t changed, but I have. This was cringe worthy but thankfully I listen to fluffy books to help me fall asleep this definitely fit the bill. It’s predictable, pedantic, old school but I should have known better her many fans seek this so who am I to criticize.

Mildly interesting story marred by lazy writing

The narrator was fabulous, or I would have ditched this early on. He sounded like a gentler Liam Neeson, and gave his novel the heft it sorely needed.

As for the novel, this needed a good editor. It was uneven, especially towards the end (Ruby's story was so rushed to get to the final use of the wedding dress) Plus it was so repetative, it made me think the author thought we could not recall that someone was sad about X, or depressed about X without being constantly reminded of it in stark terms. I feel it would be suitable as an intantly forgettable beach read.

Interesting Story of a journey through several generations.

I liked parts of this book others not as much. My favourite characters by far were Eleanore and Alex. For me the story kind of lost its impetus when they were no longer in it. Loved the way the wedding dress was described. I could easily visualize it. I didn’t care for the narrator. I think it might have been better narrated by a woman. I would recommend this book

Pleasantly surprised

I’m not certain why I have never read Danielle Steele’s books - I’ve seen them for years and I guess I thought they were not for me. But I was searching for something different and I truly enjoyed this story! Consider me a new fan. Rich characters and the story moves appropriately through the years.

Boring

Given I am a huge Danielle Steel fan, I'm a little taken back at how boring this book was. I listened clear to the end hoping to hear something better, it just never happened.

A little predictable because I'm a fan of world history, especially the last 200 yrs.
