Publisher's Summary

Three plucky women lift the spirits of home-front brides in wartime Britain, where clothes rationing leaves little opportunity for pomp or celebration—even at weddings—in this heartwarming novel based on true events, from the bestselling author of The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir.

After renowned fashion designer Cressida Westcott loses both her home and her design house in the London Blitz, she has nowhere to go but the family manor house she fled decades ago. Praying that her niece and nephew will be more hospitable than her brother had been, she arrives with nothing but the clothes she stands in, at a loss as to how to rebuild her business while staying in a quaint country village.

Her niece, Violet Westcott, is thrilled that her famous aunt is coming to stay—the village has been interminably dull with all the men off fighting. But just as Cressida arrives, so does Violet’s conscription letter. It couldn’t have come at a worse time; how will she ever find a suitably aristocratic husband if she has to spend her days wearing a frumpy uniform and doing war work?

Meanwhile, the local vicar’s daughter, Grace Carlisle, is trying in vain to repair her mother’s gown, her only chance of a white wedding. When Cressida Westcott appears at the local Sewing Circle meeting, Grace asks for her help—but Cressida has much more to teach the ladies than just simple sewing skills.

Before long, Cressida’s spirit and ambition galvanizes the village group into action, and they find themselves mending wedding dresses not only for local brides, but for brides across the country. And as the women dedicate themselves to helping others celebrate love, they might even manage to find it for themselves.

Excellent

This is an engaging historical fiction that brings stories of living in war-era Britain to life. It was a touch predictable, but heart warming and interesting enough to forgive that aspect. Definitely a good listen, and the performance was well done, and the format easy to follow.

Loved the stories

I never knew about the fashion rations of the 2nd world War. It was so interesting to read and funny, and romantic and tragic at times. the narrator made it so real.

A wonderful story, beautifully told

The characters were believable and the attention to details of that era brought me into that community and that era.

Delightful historical fiction

Uplifting historical fiction about friendship, resilience, and love. Likeable characters and intermingling plots/storylines. A little bit like a "Hallmark movie"meets historical fiction. Very good narrator. The authors note at the end is very interesting, explaining about actual wedding dress sharing during World War 2 in Great Britain.

Incredible storytelling!

This story of pulling together, making due and sharing the burdens that inevitably come with war is a shining example of what community truly should be. Jennifer Ryan skillfully wove the story together through the shared lives and loves of characters trying to fulfill their lives rather than just endure the circumstances of war.

Love the story!

This story reminded me of WWII stories from my parents and grandparents. My mother was a teenager during the war and learned to sew to “make do.” She furthered her skills as a “Home Ec” major in college, then worked for a department store’s designer’s department in “upscale alterations” as a newlywed. Mama passed on her skills and knowledge to me! I owned a bridal shop, as a newlywed, for 5 years. This story was right up my alley, especially how working together builds friendships.

Fascinating!

My mother was 14 when war broke out and she lived in Erith in Kent so this book made me think of her and I wished that I could talk to her but she died a couple of years ago.
