À propos de cet audio
The New York Times bestselling author of The Ex Hex and The Kiss Curse brightens up the Winter Solstice with another delightfully spooky novel following Bowen Penhallow and the girl he feels strangely drawn to—especially when she becomes his only hope of salvation after a strong spell sends them to a Yuletide celebration... more than 50 years in the past.
Bowen Penhallow has always been a loner, studying dark and ancient magic on a mountaintop in Wales. He prefers it that way. But when his friend Colin—who happens to be a ghost—asks him to attend a Yuletide wedding at a grand estate deep in the Welsh countryside, Bowen reluctantly agrees.
Tamsyn Bligh is not a witch, but she makes her living off of them. As a procurer and seller of magical items, Tamsyn’s business is not always above board, but she’s been trying to fix that (mostly.) Bowen is an occasional customer—as well as the star of several of Tamsyn’s dirtiest dreams—but she’s been around enough witches to know that, as a human, getting involved with one is not the smartest idea. She’s finagled an invite to the Witchy Wedding of the Century in the hopes of finally making a score big enough to retire. Just one priceless magical artifact from Tywyll House would set her up for life.
But Tamsyn isn’t the only one sneaking about in Tywyll House, and the mix of a very strong spell combined with a wedding mishap transports Bowen and Tamsyn into Tywyll House’s past, to the Yuletide Celebration of 1958. As Bowen and Tamsyn work together to get back to the present, they must also face off with the origins of Tywyll House’s haunting, the suspicions of their fellow witches…oh, and the fact that somewhere between the mistletoe and the bonfire, they might be falling in love.
This book hooked me from the very beginning. Up until about 72%, it was a solid 5-star experience for me. I loved living inside these characters’ heads — their inner monologues were hilarious. The humor genuinely worked for me, and I laughed out loud constantly.
The Christmassy vibes were very subtle, and I think you could easily get away with reading this book at any time of year. The magic and witchy atmosphere were overall fun and cozy, and the secret yearning was my favorite part of the romance. The buildup and the relationship dynamic between the FMC and MMC worked so well for me. I loved them together and really enjoyed them as a couple.
However, once the couple gets together, things shift in both the humor and overall tone. I don’t know if it was because their relationship dynamic changed, but the humor just didn’t hit the same after they get together for the first time. I felt like the jokes became more sex-focused, and they simply didn’t land for me. That tonal shift took away from what had been working so well in the first three-quarters of the book.
Sadly, none of the spicy scenes ignited any spark within me as the reader. It lacked butterflies, and naturally, that was disappointing. I did briefly wonder if the spice might have hit differently had I been physically reading instead of listening, but honestly, I doubt it. The narrator’s performance was working so well for me that I can’t blame her for the lack of butterflies.
Because the romance didn’t fully land for me and the humor changed in a way that didn’t hit as strongly, my rating shifted from what would have been a 5-star read to a 4-star read, which is still good. However, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed, because I was truly having such a fantastic time listening to this book, and I would have loved for that experience to carry all the way through to the very end.
Overall, this was a highly enjoyable read with outstanding narration, sharp humor, and a great romantic setup — even if the emotional payoff didn’t fully deliver for me in the final portion.
amazing performance
