Publisher's Summary

A heart-pounding novel of unspeakable crimes and unforgivable sins from the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Sound of Rain.

Homicide detective Nicole Foster has finally balanced an unsteady life and is anxious for a second chance. There’s no better place to start over than at the beginning - back at her childhood home on the Washington coast, where’s she raising her niece and keeping an eye on her increasingly fragile father. But Nicole’s past is never truly behind her - not when a disturbing new case stirs dark memories of the haunting investigation that shattered her career.

In the middle of the hottest August in a century, a toddler is found dead inside a parked car. Her father says he forgot her. It’s an unthinkable crime. And for Nicole, it’s made all the more unbearable by her own suffocating secrets - those shared by an old rival who has reappeared from the shadows and is pushing Nicole to the edge once again.

Now, wherever the truth lies, solving this case and avenging an unforgivable death is the most important move in Nicole’s career. But to see it through to the end, how far is she willing to go? And what is she prepared to risk this time?

Wonderful story

A well told tale to complete the story of the main characters life as a detective. It was riveting and held my interest right to the end.

very frustrating

listened to Sound of Rain first, almost shut it off, a more than depressing book. This book just wanted to kick her in the butt for falling for the lies constantly.
Not impressed.

What goes around comes around...

I really like Gregg Olsen and have enjoyed every fictional book of his that I've ever read/listened to.
The Weight of Silence is the second book in the Nicole Foster series. I don't think it really matters if they are read in order. It's been almost two years since the first was released and I did not go back and reread it.
This is a story right out of headline news. Father goes to work and forgets infant daughter in back seat of car. Hot summer weather, interior heats up like an oven and baby's fate is sealed.
I actually saw a story like this in the news, that father was convicted of murder. Do people really believe the average person will swallow this??
The other storyline deals with Nicole. She's raising her niece as her own. Her sister murdered her own husband the child's father) along with a few others. Nicole's ultimatum was for her to disappear and give Nicole guardianship. He sister did and Nicole told the child her mother was dead. Now her sister has reappeared and wants to see her daughter. Why?
Nicole's internal struggle through out the book is palpable. Should she turn her sister in, risk prison herself and admit to her niece that she lied... or should she just kill her sister? I think the author made an excellent decision on his ending!!
Karen Peakes does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS!

Boring

The writer continually stressed the love Nicky had for Emma and her dog to the point of ridiculous stupidity. The story line was weak and very predictable.
I would not recommend although the reader was very proficient.

Suspenseful and fascinating

This is less of a book and more of a visit to a world with these characters. Gregg Olsen does his usual magnificent job of bringing you in, and Karen Peakes’ performance is stellar!

New to this Author

This is the first book by this author I have read. My sister in law recommended it. There a few twists within the storyline. I’m going to download other books by this author. I would recommend this to mystery/thriller readers.

On the edge of my seat!

I adore Gregg Olsen’s writing! He is so descriptive and so fun to listen too. I hope one day he writes a book about an adventure with a paramedic :D

nope...spoilers ahead.

Okay, so I really like Gregg Olsen, usually. I have never disliked a lead character so much. My eyes hurt, from the excessive eye rolls I have been doing. The total 180 Nicole does is absolutely ridiculous 🙄. Book 1. Fired Cop with gambling addiction and a ex-boyfriend cop who is a murderer. Sister is a sociopath with a child -porn dealing husband who is a frat brother to Nicole's ex. Nicole hooks up with the father of the little girl that is killed (main storyline ) ... sound like Days of our lifes? And it only gets more insane.
So Nicole's crazy sister tries talking her into killing her husband. Promises Nicole she won't, like a good sociopath, she is convincing enough. And then kills her husband while Nicole is a a recital with with Stacey 's (crazy sister) daughter. Still there? Following Along? Because this is were it gets "crazy".
Stacey has been having an affair with Nicole's current boyfriend( the dead girls grieving dad), for a while. They took out a $5,000,000 life insurance policy on his kid. Now his daughter is gone her husband is gone and they have so much $$$.
So Nicole, the ex-cop decides that extortion of her sister and ex is the most logical course of action. She demands $50,000 and custody of Stacey's daughter. And... scene. Seriously this was the end.

Now a brief overview of book 2:
Forget chapter 1 it tells you how the last chapter ends. That is if you have ever read a "thriller, or mystery ", this by the way is neither.
So Nicole the ex cop with the gambling addiction is now some how even more unlike able. One minute she is high on moral values then plotting to kill her sister. Who, by the way has returned from Mexico after killing her next husband (Nicole's ex boyfriend), and wants to see her daughter.
There is a crime going on in the background of this story. A horrible death involving two parents and their 1 year old that is left in a car during a triple digit heat wave. A mom obsessed with her nursing career and a dad equally obsessed with his COSCO like job. Ohhh and their polyamorous lifestyle. Thruple?? If there is a new sexual term, it is absolutely used to describe these two. From bi-sexual to pan-sexual with full descriptions. Tons of filler with little substance.
You have to deal Nicole and her pitty poor me attitude. Her gambling addiction (which she overcomes with one trip to the casino), her obsession with her sister and niece. One she absolutely hates and one she loves????
And ohh yeah she is a cop again. Who is plotting to kill her sister because she asked to see her daughter. (Stacey is a sociopath, but... really!!) Nicole refused to help her sister kill her sister's husband who is a child porn dealer and involved in a murdered child case Nicole lost her job over. But now she's okay to kill her sister because she is back... asking to see her kid... acting like she alway has.
I just wish I could get the 20+ hours of my life back. This is just bad. I truly do not get the 5* ratings, I really don't. Save yourself some eye rolls and read his book Lying next to me.
