Publisher's Summary

No one really knows what they are. Only that they're the first civilization. Aeons, they call themselves. They're immortal. Powerful. Secretive.

And they'll come for her.

Witch Wynter Dellavale knows that for certain. Because in unfairly trying to execute her, they started a chain of events they're struggling to stop. Needing safety, she flees to Devil's Cradle, the home of monsters. A place for the outcasts, the fugitives, the crazies. A place ruled by the Ancients, seven beings who were once banished by the Aeons. Among the Ancients is the infamous Cain, brother of Abel and embodiment of jealousy - who, on another note, wants her in his bed.

There's a heavy price for the safety the Ancients offer, but Wynter will have to pay it. She can't take on the Aeons alone. And she has no intention of dying - been there, done that.

Not that she'll be the easy prey the Aeons are expecting. They have no knowledge of the...thing that lives inside her. You see, when witches are brought back from the afterlife, they don't always come back the same.

And they don't always come back alone.

Another win for Suzanne Wright

I don't usualy listen to "majic" books. As this was Suzanne Wright i had to try it. OMG I loved it!
I have a number of her audiobooks and love them and she did not fail me this time either. Great Characters, strong female lead. It is now a few days after i finished the book and I find myselph thinking about it, sort of missing the stiry and wanting it to go on. I really hope there is another one soon.

Good story, whiny Narrator

I enjoyed the story but hate the narrator. She just makes all the female characters sound whiny and childish and doesn't do a great job with male characters. I listened to another book she's done and had to return it because she was so bad. I was hoping she had improved but she hasn't. I will not buy the rest of the series in audio book form however I will continue the series on my e-reader.

Great new series.

This book was so good! I am a huge fan of Suzanne Wright, and this book did not disappoint. Wynter was an amazing character. Her level of self awareness is something everyone should hope for. She is strong, brave, fierce, and protective. Cain on the other hand is a total enigma. He is confident, controlling ( not in a over the top way) and driven. I love that even though they are instantly attracted to each other and their chemistry is crazy they don’t fall in love immediately. Actually by the end of the book neither has realize the depth of their feelings yet. As if the main characters aren’t a good enough reason to read this book the side characters definitely are. This is the biggest group of crazy individuals I have ever read. And that is saying something. Each character is so different but go together so well. I just can’t wait for the next book. Please hurry

Great first book!

4.5 Stars 🌟

I came into this series cold. I have really liked several series from this author, and that is what made me stop and take a look at the summary. But, other than that - I didn't look any further - no reviews...etc.

The premise is definitely original and the book starts off with things already in motion. We (as readers) don't really know the exact reason that the female MC Wynter (a witch) is being exiled from her coven and her community, but she is. She is being kicked out/banished from her home exactly as her mother was many years ago. The occupants of their community are told that when people are banished, they lose their memories (they are taken from them) and then they are transported to the surface (they currently live in an underground community) and left - presumably to start a new life with no memories of their old civilization.

While this is going on, Wynter discovers that everything that she has been told by the leaders of her society are in essence...lies. They do not just banish the exiles, they kill them. The other thing that we learn fairly quickly is that Wynter is not your usual witch. She has powers, powers that she has kept hidden her entire life.

So, things in this book started off with a bang. Wynter escapes death and eventually finds a group of other supes which she labels misfits and these 4 become her family. They become extremely close and they act in concert to defend against the many, many bounty holders trying to kill them - well, the bounty hunters who are really trying to kill Wynter.

We then learn about the "other" secret civilization that was formed by the war between the Aeons (where she originally lived) and the Ancients. The Ancients have formed their new colony - the Devil's Cradle - after losing the war with the Aeons and they then offer sanctuary to supes that are running from something....for a price.

This is where things get interesting. Cain (yes that Cain) is one of the Ancients who rule over this colony and he is immediately fascinated by Wynter. So....no more info on the storyline other than to say that I REALLY enjoyed it. There is some great world building - still in progress, but it IS just the first book. There are also some fun and interesting characters and it is easy to like them and to begin to root for them. There are also the requisite "bad guys".

The game board is set. Wynter is the key. The question is...why? What exactly is she? Why is she so important?

Fun, fun, fun. I'm hooked. Can not wait for the next book :)

Story Premise OK

This story is OK but absolutely not up to this author's typical excellent standards.

Actually, if the quirky secondary characters (the coven) were developed further, that might have compensated somewhat for the primary character's lack of development and the obviousness of certain storyline aspects.

I do applaud her willingness to step outside her normal story type. I'll happily continue to buy this author's books.

Familiar characters

Is it just me or do the characters bear a similar feel to Knox & Harper and Harper’s friends? The narrator is not my favorite. It was ok but it just seems to be similar to the Deep in Your Veins series.

I needed this

Suzanne’s books crack me up and I find myself bursting out in laughter, which kinda makes me look like a crazy person depending on where I am. While this is similar to Knox and Harper, it’s still different enough to still entertain you. And I see that some aren’t crazy about Cat’s voices for characters but they actually fit the characters in both books. I don’t think anyone could have done better justice to each character and I always knew “who” was talking before the clarification.
Nevertheless, it’s worth the credit spent and the time listening and I am looking forward to the next book.

OMG! Love this series

Suzanne has done it again. I ways love her female characters. Sure the males are hot, sexy, and pure alpha men (and Cain is all that and then some), but the female characters Willa ways be my favorite. Take Wynter for example. She’s a badass that tries to fly under the radar. She’s being hunted but the secrets she hold are more frightening. When she and her band of misfits seek sanctuary in The Keep, she not only brings danger, but she and Cain have a common enemy that they would both like to see dead.

Suzanne weaves an exciting and many times, funny, tale. Wynters friends are hysterical…Xavier is a compulsive liar, Delilah is the messenger of Karma and she is unapologetic, Annabelle/ Mary Mary is a neurotic who can be turned into a killing machine with a mere whisper of “Mary Mary, come out and play”😄, and Hattie with her constant need for clarification of sex terms along with her inappropriate queries at times. Wynters coven is hysterical and fiercely loyal to her.

I love all of her books and this one was no different. As always, I can’t wait for the next installment.

I just don’t like the narrator

This is very similar to Harper and Knox in Burn and I liked that story better. Also, I stopped listening to that series because the narrator’s voice for the secondary characters is so very annoying.

Reminds me of Harper and Knox

I did like the story, the narrator is my problem. I often have to stop listening because the narrator is just trying too hard it doesn't feel like what she's reading is a natural conversation. Overacting often comes to mind when I listen to her narrate. I'm sorry but I will read and will not listen to the following books in this series.
