Publisher's Summary

Paradise lost...

In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. The world is a paradise - and then, in a moment, it ends. The council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive.

But scattered across the face of the earth are communities which have returned to the natural life of soil and small farm. In the village of Raven’s Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap. Refugees are flooding in, bandits are roaming the woods, and his former lover and his only daughter struggle through the Fallen landscape. Enemies, new and old, gather like jackals around a wounded lion.

But what the jackals do not know is that while old he may be, this lion is far from death. And hidden in the past is a mystery that has waited until this time to be revealed. You cross Edmund Talbot at your peril, for a smith is not all he once was....

Still amazing

This was the first John Ringo book I ever read years and years ago. Since that time I believe I have read just about everything he’s ever put out he is by far one of my absolute favourite authors. And this is the book that started it all I can’t recommend it a enough !

A Disappointing Reprise

"There Will Be Dragons" is one of my favorite books, and the first audiobook I owned thanks to the CD that was packaged with the original hardcover release. In comparison, Tim Fannon's performance is lacking when compared to the original narrator. He inconsistently mispronounces the names, and the prospect of listening to him butcher "Daneh", "Sheida", and "Ghorbani" for the whole book are unattractive.

context

if you're going to publish military fiction, get someone to narrate who understands the jargon. please. give loved this series for damn near twenty years and hearing things pronounced wrong or enunciated badly, or inflected limply makes my teeth itch. you can do better. please do.

Almost perfect

This is third on my 5 favorite genra list for advance tech society going back in time somehow. I give it props for adding a fantasy twist to it but bump it down the list for having a little too much sillyness and a certain lack of je ne sais quoi. That certain something is some unidentifiable mixture of character development, ability to draw you in, tactics & old tech development, and more. If you do like this series you should look up a few others on my fav list.

1) SM sterlings the ember verse
2) Olen Thorensens crucible series
3) John Ringo the council wars
4) Eric Flint and David Webber the Ring of fire
5) David Weber safe hold series

Quite an amazing little book

I was skeptical on this book in the first 20 minutes but it captured my attention and I loved it. It has a great collection of lovable characters as well as great villains. It's an excellent study on history and political science as well.

Don't set your expectations too high.

It's not a bad little adventure but there are frequent terrible mispronunciations and moments of truly abject stupidity, from the author, not the characters, usually in the form of sweeping generalizations and over simplifications, an amount of gender essentialism that I find hilarious but many will be downright offended by.

I'll finish this book but I won't continue with anything else by this author.

great action, great humor, an awesome plot.

this book will make you laugh get angry feel for the characters and otherwise not want to put it down but what would you expect from this author set in a period somewhat similar to medieval times yet intricate and fun definitely worth the credit.

John Ringo can write one hell of a story

I read this book years ago, loved it then, Love it now in audio.
Ringo is one of my favorite storytellers. Give this book or any of his books a try, you won’t regret it.

Weird medieval prepper story

Couldn't finish, gave up about 6 hours in. Only got that far because another reviewer said it picks up after the beginning. Mostly it's about how great, and definitely not weird, the people who devote their whole life to the Renaissance Festival lifestyle are. With a large section of the book devoted to justifying rape fantasies.
