Publisher's Summary

A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant's These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing audiobook of suspense.

No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world.

For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

The only people who know they exist are Scotland, an overly friendly hermit with murky intentions, and Cooper's old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn't show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred - and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. When a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding - or finally face the sins of his past.

Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.

"The story unwinds at a slow pace, but the denouement is dramatic, surprising, and, finally, gratifying." (AudioFile)

Survival and sacrifice all for love

I finished this book in three days. There’s something about books with themes that entail the woods and isolation and surviving…the simple life, that pull me in and hang on tight. I was not expecting the ending and it had me in tears. This is my first Kimi Cunningham Grant and I’ll be sure to get some more in my collection. Very well written and very well narrated.

Good listening with just enough intrig and mysterious characters.

Loved the storyline. Loved the characters. Wished the reader had just a little more intonation in some passages.

Unbelievably Selfish

I couldn’t stand this story. What a selfish, hideous father. He made awful decisions for his daughter and then he made a terrible judgment and detested his kind neighbour for years. He selfishly wanted to keep from reporting the young girls murder. Then he allowed the kind neighbour to take the fall and be labeled a psychopath all while the real killer walked free. Just so he could keep his daughter locked away in the woods living as a dead person? That would all be ok if the author didn’t try and convince us he was a “good man” because he certainly wasn’t.

The only reason I have the narration such a low rating was because of the fact that the female character (I can’t recall her name) was narrated with a British accent. She was from the same area as her brother. She only lived in the UK with her husband for 10 years. So why would she have a British accent? I lived in the UK for years too but it didn’t give me an accent. Maybe I missed something but that was very distracting.
