Publisher's Summary

Contains two stand-alone books from Benedict Patrick’s Yarnsworld series.

Series can be listened to in any order.

They Mostly Come out at Night, book one

The villagers of the forest seal themselves in their cellars at night, whispering folktales to each other about the monsters that prey on them in the dark. Only the Magpie King, their shadowy, unseen protector, can keep them safe.

However, when an outcast called Lonan begins to dream of the Magpie King’s defeat at the hands of inhuman invaders, this young man must do what he can to protect his village. He is the only person who can keep his loved ones from being stolen away after dark, and to do so he will have to convince them to trust him again.

From the Shadows of the Owl Queen's Court, book four

If you value your life, stay out of the forest. As a captive of the Owl Queen’s Court, Nascha’s life has always been one knife’s edge away from disaster. But when she is threatened for nothing more than the color of her hair, Nascha attempts the unthinkable: an escape through the dreaded Magpie King’s forest.

Hunted by sharp-toothed and sharper-witted foxfolk and hated by all for being a witch, Nascha fears herself doomed until she joins forces with a mysterious young man. With him she finds a glimmer of hope, even as her own unpredictable powers flicker into existence.

But hope is fleeting. The forces arrayed against her are insurmountable, and Nascha soon comes to realize that pursuit of her own freedom will come at a greater cost to the forest. As the darkness closes in around them, Nascha is forced to ask: At what price is she willing to purchase her life? How dearly is she willing to sell it?

Includes a special note from the author.

Fans of Gaiman, look no further

If you enjoyed American Gods and Anansi Boys, you'll like this. Narrator gives an excellent performance, the story doesn't hold your hand but takes you a rich world dripping in folklore both familiar and alien.

Perfect!

I don’t think I can do this book, this series justice. First of all, I read a LOT… 3-4 books per week. After I worked my way through Gaiman, Pratchett, Tolkien, Martin, and a few others, I resigned myself to the fact that most fantasy/folklore books are written for YA. There just aren’t enough truly GREAT books in the genre. Ive just accepted that fact and lowered my expectations accordingly. To my surprise, THIS BOOK knocked my socks off. The characters are relatable and complex, the world is rich and lush, and the story is just amazing, it’s really layer upon layer of stories, woven together from folklore from around the globe. Patrick is a true shenachie. The narrator is perfect.

Halfway through chapter 1 I found myself googling his name because I already knew I wanted to read everything he’d ever written. If you love fantasy & folklore, you will love this book. JUST READ IT (or, you know, listen:)

Quite good

This is my first delving into the Yarnwood series (?) by Benedict Patrick and I had no idea about them at all.
I did enjoy the stories despite the sad theme. It’s a bit different to have folklore stories peppered into the main story but not jarring.
All in all quite deserving of 4*

beautiful and horrible

there is something about a story that both draws you in and keeps you attached to the characters all the while changing the way you view a happy ending ... it's a true fairy tale, before they became coated in "happy endings" that disney deemed important. the author has really drawn me into this world and I am about to start into the other 3 books of the series. these two were an amazing start and I look forward to an all new tale.

Old Dark Ghibli

These are two great tales written very well. They have almost this Studio Ghibli fairy tale air about them--but the old gritty ones. The characters are great and you really feel the tragedy they suffer through.

The saddest thing I ever heard 😭

This had to be the most horrible, heartbreaking, depressing and tragic thing I’ve ever had the misfortune of listening to. Good grief! How on earth is this stuff a part of someone’s culture that is passed down from generation to generation? No!!! It’s just plain wrong 😑.

I quite simply hated EVERY heart wrenching second of it.

Wow

Very captivating book! Wished they had better outcomes for the cast but not all stories have a happy ending

Great stories with unhappy endings.

I very much like the world the author created, how they write, and the characters that they made. If you're looking for happy endings to your story this is not where you'll find that. but it works very well for the world the author made.

If your enjoy the dark fairy tale end of fantasy writers, give this one s chance.

I enjoyed pretty much everything about this book.
Deep lore, we’ll developed characters, real consequences for actions rather than an “everything works out in the end” approach made this one of my favorite newer writers I’ve come across in a long time.
I like that it reminds me of how Mike Mignola wrote Hellboy in his earlier works. Mignola would borrow heavily from existing mythology always always putting a new take or enough spin on it to suck the reader in while making it completely his.
Benedict Patrick does it very well.
