Things We Do in the Dark is a brilliant new thriller from Jennifer Hillier, the award-winning author of the breakout novels Little Secrets and Jar of Hearts. Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future.

When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom—covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her—she knows she'll be charged with murder. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future.

Twenty-five years earlier, Ruby Reyes, known as the Ice Queen, was convicted of a similar murder in a trial that riveted Canada in the early nineties. Reyes knows who Paris really is, and when she's unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to expose all of Paris's secrets. Left with no other choice, Paris must finally confront the dark past she escaped, once and for all.

Because the only thing worse than a murder charge are two murder charges.

Murder, secrets, fast paced thriller!

Paris Peralta is arrested in her bathroom covered in blood as her husband is found dead in the bathtub. Her husband is a well-known comedian, and incident hits the media all over. Paris is being charged with his murder and needs to find proof of crossing the Canadian border back into the country during the time of Husband Jimmys death. Paris is certain that being able to prove her innocence means someone from her past will recognize her, and she will be convicted of so much more in the processes. She has a very dark past, one she has worked so hard to run and forget.
The setting takes place in much of Toronto during Paris' childhood and present-day Seattle.
Great book! Its fast paced and I was really engrossed in this plot with every event. There are chapters that do give away bits and pieces of the plot but even so I found myself reading through wanting to read about it and despite being a predictable plot, there are some little twists at the ending that were well worth the read. I really enjoyed it and found it very creative/ clever.
Some trigger warnings: child abuse, rape, suicide...

Predictable but keeps you interested

this book was ok. i like a good plot twist that keeps you guessing and with this book you know theres one coming, but its also very easy to guess what the twist is. it keeps you reading/listening and the narrator is alright, just doesnt have much variation in character voices. worth a read if its your genre.

Best book I've read this month

I've been on quite the roll with psych thrillers, mysteries, and suspense this last week and this one is by far my favorite of them all. The way in which this book was written was very clever. I like the dual timeline and the separate parts that all come together in the end. This is one of my favorite ways to read a book. With that being said, there are some very traumatic subject matter in this book but I do think Jennifer does a really great job with explaining that but also keeping the details to a minimum. Very classy. The plot twists were predictable but I don't think that is a bad thing at all. I am not always into plot twists, sometimes I enjoy the unfolding story in front of me being what it is. I think this would make a really fantastic movie. It was a good read. I didn't mind the narrator, but not one of my favorites, I don't appreciate that she read any musical lyrics the way she did... Her voice is a good reading voice but this is the first book I have ever listened to where I could hear the narrator lick her lips, or other mouth sounds. It's a little off putting but the story really outweighed that con for me. Highly recommend.
