Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new audiobook about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew - even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it all - the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become.

Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour-de-force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

What the critics say

"Oh, how I love Katherine Center’s writing…and her newest novel is a gem...a story that reminds us that the word emergency has, at its heart, a new beginning. Just read it, and thank me later.” (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author)

Lovely story- a bit too many cliches

It was an easy book to listen to- the story was interesting- but often it seemed like the author was trying too hard to get across certain points like forgiveness - where as it was something that was happening in the book, it felt like every time it happened it was like the same simplistic solution was brought out of their mouths and everything worked out okay. Maybe trying too hard?
Otherwise a good idea for a story. Just not a huge fan of the script at times.

Outstanding

Such a great story, covering so many emotional issues and feelings. Lots of insight about being a firefighter in a so call man’s world.Brilliantly narrated by Therese Plummer, capturing the feelings of a woman desperate to keep love and relationships at bay.

Perfection

Katherine Center and Therese Plummer are my audible dream team!!!! The story is sweet, but provides just enough plot twists to keep things interesting until the very end!!!! Sad to have finished this one... can’t wait for the next!

Soul searching

This story is a journey through everyone's life, even though none of us have the same chapters or stories. It relates to anyone who has tried to protect themselves from the pain and sorrows in our daily experiences only to find out in the end, it really is impossible to live this way and be human.
Please read this book, because it may help you to forgive yourself and others and then really start to understand and enjoy the people that really love you!

Lit my fire

Yes somewhat predictable but so well written that it didn’t matter. Loved all the themes and serious topics woven throughout. Only slight complaint is that I wish there were more rookie and Cassie scenes

Very uplifting

Perfect timing in my life to listen to this book. The message of forgiveness and love rang true throughout. It was a great listen, a great message and thoroughly enjoyable. There were times where I thought it might translate to a Hallmark movie, but even if it did, I would still watch.!

Sappy & Predictable

I was really disappointed with the story and characters in this book. Everything was so vanilla; even the complexities added to some of the characters’ backstories were very straightforwardly presented. There were simply no surprises, and the main character just straight-up gave you a running psychoanalysis of herself throughout the text. There was a lot more that could have been done with the plot line of a female firefighter I think.

Very entertaining

Very entertaining, although predictable. Love the mushy sentiments. Can’t learn too many life lessons, if you ask me
