Read the first book in the series & was only just invested enough to try this one. This book was mediocre at best.

❤'d it. but I struggled in the middle a bit. I ❤ the characters and I could feel the heartbreak. It was very well written. Surprise endings are the best. :) Can't wait for the next one. #ShannonHammerRocks

I do enjoy the fixer upper elements, but after six books I’m so sick of the fact that I’ve made it through six books and there’s not even a one second to bit part role for a single person who is not 100% white and excessively emphasized as such… it starts to get a little uncomfortable when reality is so skewed that you realize that in this fantasy land there has never once even for one second been a person who is not mcWhitey. I have German ethnicity, so I grew up in a culture that was extremely aware of how toxic this can be in creative productions . If it becomes aggressively different from reality, then it becomes a statement.
Also, after six books, you realize how sickening the over villanizationof the same archetype of “bitch” woman is… Women tend to be villainized and men over idealized. Ther books are filled with uncles and fathers and male friends that are all cardboard perfect while women other than her docile friends are presented as Disney like villains… it’s very flat and simplistic. Every book there’s another version of., “ he’s so nice and kind and understanding and I just don’t understand how he could’ve ended up with such a mean awful disgusting wife! I mean they’ve been married for like 15 or 20 years and he’s just never noticed that his wife is a bitch that poor poor poor wonderful man!!” it gets really really old it’s sad that if you love contracting and Victorian architecture, you have to make it through all these insipid delusional girl, thoughts and simplifications about life and people
