Story
From the author of the New York Times best sellers All Adults Here and This Time Tomorrow, a smart, highly entertaining novel about a tight-knit group of friends from college - and what it means to finally grow up, well after adulthood has set in. Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth and Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy real estate, and start businesses and families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch to their own offspring.

Story
Would you choose to know how long you’ll live? It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role. Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it. And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment.

Publisher's Summary
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
“The pages brim with tenderness and an appreciation for what we had and who we were. I could not have loved it more."—Ann Patchett
“One of the most moving and intelligent time travel novels I have ever read. Nostalgic, wise, funny, and filled with love."—Gabrielle Zevin
“The kind of book that will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you call the people you love. Exceptional."—Emily Henry
What if you could take a vacation to your past?
With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes and a different kind of love story.
On the eve of her fortieth birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, and her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning, she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her sixteenth birthday. But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush—it’s her dad, the vital, charming, forty-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?
What the critics say
"Marin Ireland offers an adroit and heartfelt performance of Emma Straub's clever new novel, which repurposes the time-travel trope to explore what makes life meaningful.... Add her gifts for characterization and mimicry, which channel teenagers and adults to marvelous effect, and you have addictive listening." (AudioFile)
“What if you could go back in time to be with your elderly dying parent when they were young and healthy? Emma Straub turns this question into reality in her fifth and delightful novel. . . How do we talk with each other about things that really matter?. . .Straub is wise enough to know that despite having ample time, it’s never enough.”—Boston Globe
“Even if the premise of This Time Tomorrow is a flight from realism, the scope of Alice’s concerns is human-scale and plausible. . .although her travels through time allow her to reconsider her romantic history, the person whose past she is most eager to set right is her father, a man whose imminent mortality deepens the novel’s ambient nostalgia into something pressing and poignant.”—The New York Times
“If you could be 16 again, would you? Emma Straub, the queen of the smart-girl summer read, takes that question literally in her light-footed latest about a Manhattanite… a breezy but surprisingly poignant meditation on romance, regret, and family.”—Entertainment Weekly

I have to say I did enjoy the story!although it was not what I was expecting. Given the fact that I follow Emma because of her career as a hospice nurse, I was hoping to hear stories about her experiences given permission from the people she has worked with in the past. 👍🏻

Loved!
I love Marin Ireland and purchased this listen primarily because of her. This was my first Emma Straub novel. I loved it!
It could be that I’m 1980s baby and her description of her 16 yr old self seemed all too familiar. It was a great read. Made me reflect on my own parents and what I know (or don’t know) about their lives before being parents. And what I might change if I could about my past to create an alternate ending.
Loved and already recommended to my friends.

poignant, funny, charming pretty much throughout.
I usually don't like every voice the narrator uses, but this time it seemed to really fit. At one point I wasn't sure I was going to like where the story was headed, but it resolved itself within a chapter or so. Things don't have to end happily for me to enjoy a story, but they have to make sense. this made sense, at least to me.
I definitely recommend this book.

So much to think about
The writing is so good. I felt like I was invisibly standing next to the main character through the entire book, feeling all she was feeling. I tried so hard to guess what was coming next, but never guessed. When it ended, I sat and thought about it for quite awhile. I won’t ever forget this book. Excellent message. Excellent story. It felt so possible.

Beautiful tribute to a single father and a creative way to explore grief. Emma Straub wrote the most loving tribute to her father who I am also a fan of as a Gen Xer who read his books in the 80s as a teen. Highly recommend this audio performance, too.

Rambled
Story started out good, but got redundant. I like long books, and was hesitant to purchase this one, because it was on the short side. However… I wish it had ended LONG before it finally came to a conclusion. I make it a rule to try to complete all books I begin, and try not to see how much time is left. This one had me wishing the time would tick away faster. The climax came very early, while the conclusion of the book was the last two-thirds.

Blast to the past
I picked up this title during a 2 for 1 sale. Time travel is intriguing but even more so when it’s going back to the early 90s. Since I just had a milestone birthday, I particularly enjoyed reminiscing about the “good ole days”.
My one complaint is that it seemed to go a little Ground Hog’s day. However, although things didn’t end the way I thought, i appreciate why the author resolved the story the way she did.
The author’s note at the end made the story more relatable and chances are good, I’ll try out another one of her titles.
