À propos de cet audio

May 10, 1940. The Netherlands was swarming with Third Reich troops. In seven days it's entirely occupied by Nazi Germany. Joining a small resistance cell in the Dutch city of Haarlem were three teenage girls: Hannie Schaft, and sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, who would soon band together to form a singular female underground squad.

Smart, fiercely political, devoted solely to the cause, and "with nothing to lose but their own lives", Hannie, Truus, and Freddie took terrifying direct action against Nazi targets. That included sheltering fleeing Jews, political dissidents, and Dutch resisters. They sabotaged bridges and railways, and donned disguises to lead children from probable internment in concentration camps to safehouses. They covertly transported weapons and set military facilities ablaze. And they carried out the assassinations of German soldiers and traitors - on public streets and in private traps - with the courage of veteran guerilla fighters and the cunning of seasoned spies.

Tim Brady offers a never-before-seen perspective of the Dutch resistance during the war. Of lives under threat; of how these courageous young women became involved in the underground; and of how their dedication evolved into dangerous, life-threatening missions on behalf of Dutch patriots - regardless of the consequences.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading, “Three Ordinary Girls.” Their story should never be forgotten in hopes it will never be repeated.

Exceptional Book

War is ugly. You only ever learn about the big names in school history books. The human element is often whitewashed or downplayed, and you NEVER hear about singular resistance fighters, only that there were some.
Hearing the story of these 3 amazing women — girls essentially — was gritty, humbling, and shows just how very much they sacrificed.
I loved that the narrator used the names of people and places with the correct pronunciation, it just gave another level of authenticity to the very true story.

Fascinating!

I listened to this book quite some time ago, and was surprised I hadn’t written a review at that time, yet the story remains vivid in my mind. The courage and brazenness of these girls was remarkable. Because no one suspected them, they were able to save lives. Definitely an example of truth being better than fiction.

The Dutch people have long held the Canadian military in high esteem as it was their forces that liberated their nation from the Nazis at the end of the war. Before that time however, the leftist resistance fighters waged an effective war against the evil regime from inside the country and three teenage girls, the most prominent of which, Hannie Schaft kept the German occupiers busy for 5 years, while they fought. This book details many of their activities, while they attempted to keep their humanity. There are some very, very sad tales. They were not always successful. This book is a well balanced account of their experience, a worthy read.
