Publisher's Summary

A god has died, and it’s up to Tara, a first-year associate in the international necromantic firm of Kelethras, Albrecht, and Ao, to bring him back to life before his city falls apart.

Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without him, the metropolis’ steam generators will shut down, its trains will cease running, and its four million citizens will riot.

Tara’s job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the dead god who’s having an understandable crisis of faith. When Tara and Abelard discover that Kos was murdered, they have to make a case in Alt Coulumb’s courts - and their quest for the truth endangers their partnership, their lives, and Alt Coulumb’s slim hope of survival.

Set in a phenomenally built world in which justice is a collective force bestowed on a few, craftsmen fly on lightning bolts, and gargoyles can rule cities, Three Parts Dead introduces listeners to an ethical landscape in which the line between right and wrong blurs.

About the author: Max Gladstone went to Yale, where he wrote a short story that became a finalist in the Writers of the Future competition. He lives in Boston.

What the critics say

“Max Gladstone has created a fascinating universe and equally fascinating characters. It’s a world in which magic is craft and religion has some very practical rules, and he shows it through the stories of some very interesting characters. This is his first novel. I can’t wait for his second.” (Jerry Pournelle, New York Times best-selling author)
“This has so many of my favorite things: an intriguing world, fun characters, a puzzle of a story that manages to be both funky fantasy and legal thriller. Three Parts Dead is simultaneously fast paced and thoughtful, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.” (Carrie Vaughn, New York Times best-selling author)
“The story remains suspenseful and fast-paced throughout, and the diverse, female-led cast is a joy to follow through the fascinating and unusual landscape.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Creative and Chaotic

I had high hopes for this one, and they were almost met. The world building and magic system are creative. The action scenes are on point. It has all the things an urban fantasy book lover could want. Sadly, I couldn’t quite connect to the characters or the story.

Tara, Albrecht and Kat are all good characters with intense personalities, but they didn’t have the charm or wit I hoped they might. Most of those seem to focus on how they could explain the magic system, and why they were doing certain things. There were some points where, it felt like the author wanted to explore a really fun dynamic, but it didn’t really add other than shock value.

The other clearly has fun and lets their imagination take over the story. I really enjoyed this world, the gods, and the way that magic and spellcasting was supposed to operate. Literally anything is possible here, which makes it a veritable playground for the author to explore and exploit.

That said, there were a lot of terms, and there was a lot going on that made it difficult to follow sometimes. There’s also a lot of conveniences, and then in twist that I think would’ve resolve the entire plot hadn’t been revealed earlier.

Still, if you’re a fan of crazy urban fantasy with weird magic and inventive worlds, this would be a good one to try.

Strong female characters of colour and wit

the main character is a witty, creative, and well educated woman of colour who saw injustice and tackled it in her past. During this book you see her make use of her education of complected magical craft and legal know-how to logically solve the issues before her. She has an educated, well respected, and powerful woman guiding her. there's no romance and no sex, and only briefly is there comment on whether or not another character is attractive. very well laid out and executed!

I wish I could read more on Tara and Elaine!

2 chapters in

Look, I don’t love the way 90% of audio books are recorded, so take this for what it’s worth.

The story and the world are interesting and good. But this reader…ugh. It sounds like an overeager announcer reading to a group of children. She can do voices, she doesn’t sounds like someone who doesn’t know what the words mean, but the bouncy cadence is at odds with the story. I don’t know if that’s a performance or an editing and direction issue. I suspect the latter as her voice performances have levels.

I am 2 chapters in and wondering if I can make it through the rest. The performance is cheapening the entire story. The last time I heard this style of read it was literally a children’s book.

Stop telling readers to speed up and over pronounce their words. Please please please

Very bad narration

So I haven't finished this yet and it will be a struggle. I've wanted to read this series and may have to buy the book to get through this one. the narrator is aweful. There is no flow. it sounds like a computer voice like words recorded separately and then strung together and it's a jarring experience. I don't know how good the story is yet.
