Publisher's Summary
In Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes listeners across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides.
In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a 25-foot tidal bore that crashes 80 miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture - the very old and very new.
Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet's waters in constant motion.

So much more than expected
A great mix of story, science, people, and their connections, some surprising. I had a feeling it would be good. The title was straightforward. No need to hide the truth about the book. Tides themselves are a worthy main character, but you have to have faith, and give it a read to find out why.

1/3 Science and Spirit- 2/3 meaningless details
I feel this work needs some serious abridging. I was not expecting a novel/diary where great detail is placed on people he meets, places he goes, things he is thinking about and then finally we get to some meaningful information about friction, resonance, and gravity- which is what I wanted to hear more about... (Read until chapter 8).

Primer for Global warming effects
If you are interested in water, rivers oceans lakes and the magic of the flow of water, then this is the book for you. Combines the physics of hydrology with the complex effects of the heavens. I enjoyed the mixture of anecdote, hard science, emotion and wim. I especially appreciated the fact that this was not a political agenda book. It was really about a mans passion, passion for water and its magical effects on this planet. This is my first book in a series on my self-education about global warming. Thank you to the author. I am a kayaker, stand up paddle boarder, long distance swimmer and lover of water.

This is now one of my all time favorite books. I'm pretty sure the author could talk about anything and I'd be captivated because the writing is so beautiful. Usually, science based s

Tides. Who knew?
This is a fascinating account of a natural phenomenon that we thought we knew all about. I felt that I travelled the world with the author. He explained the science behind these beautiful displays and kept me safe from the incredible power of what we were witnessing.
The literary construction and the narration were superb.

VERY INTERESTING !!
I learned a lot from listening to this book.
The author is an experienced sailor, taking young people on his sail boat to get them acquainted with this wonderful way of life.
I am pretty sure I have seen his vessel in Santa Barbara, California during my own cruising days.
He has a wonderful way of mixing anecdotes and technical explanations, so you don’t loose interest.
Sailing in the Pacific Northwest, where he lives and I do too, requires a lot of skill and know how with the many different tides and currents.
I highly recommend this book, very well narrated.
My thanks to all involved, JK

A bit of history about where the tides came from
Extremely interesting how we developed are thinking about the ocean and our planet. It just goes to show that the hundreds of years without the wrong thing and science came to a screeching halt. Sort of like what we’re going through now

Fun and informative
Loved the content and most of the narration! The only issue I had was the accents the narrator used to convey different people, they were kinda goofy/annoying. Otherwise great and like I said, I like Dan’s natural voice and performance.
