À propos de cet audio

Selah Hopewell seems to be the only woman in the Virginia colony who has no wish to wed. True, there are too many men and far too few women in James Towne. But Selah already has her hands full assisting her father in the family's shop. And now she is in charge of an incoming ship of tobacco brides who must be looked after as they sort through their many suitors.

Xander Renick is perhaps the most eligible tobacco lord in the settlement. His lands are vast, his crops are prized, and his position as a mediator between the colonists and the powerful Powhatan nation surrounding them makes him indispensable. But Xander is already wedded to his business and still grieves the loss of his wife, daughter of the Powhatan chief.

Can two fiercely independent people find happiness and fulfillment on their own? Or will they discover that what they've been missing in life has been right in front of them all along?

Best-selling and award-winning author Laura Frantz takes you to the salty shores of 17th-century Virginia in this exploration of pride, honor, and the restorative power of true love.

Great Virginia Beginnings Story

I love colonial times fiction! Laura Frantz's Tidewater Bride transports readers to the early days of the Virginia Colony, filled with rich historical detail and engaging characters. The narrative centers on Selah Hopewell, a determined young woman assisting English brides in their new lives, and Xander Renick, a prosperous tobacco plantation owner. Frantz's meticulous research shines through, offering vivid depictions of colonial life and the complexities of settler and Native American interactions.

While the romance between Selah and Xander develops naturally and doesn't overshadow the main plot, it could have been infused with more emotional depth to resonate more profoundly with readers. For instance, their shared moments during community gatherings provide glimpses into their budding relationship but stop short of fully exploring their emotional connection.

As a devoted admirer of Frantz's work, I eagerly anticipated the audiobook version. However, Barbara McCullough's narration fell short of expectations. Her delivery lacked the distinct character voices necessary to bring the diverse cast to life, making it challenging to differentiate between characters during dialogues. Worse still, she makes a lot of mouth noises, which I found distasteful and distracting. It took away from the immersive experience that Frantz’s storytelling typically offers.

In summary, Tidewater Bride stands out as a well-crafted historical novel with a subtle romantic subplot. While the audiobook's narration may not enhance the experience, the strength of Frantz's writing makes the print version a worthwhile read for those interested in early American history and character-driven stories.

C'est un peu après le milieu que ça commence à être intéressant. Je n'arrivais pas à comprendre l'accent mais j'ai fini par m'y faire .
