Publisher's Summary

A timely second edition of the classic text on transgender history, with a new introduction and updated material throughout

Covering American transgender history from the mid-20th century to today, Transgender History takes a chronological approach to the subject of transgender history, with each chapter covering major movements, writings, and events. Chapters cover the transsexual and transvestite communities in the years following World War II; trans radicalism and social change, which spanned from 1966 with the publication of The Transsexual Phenomenon and lasted through the early 1970s; the mid-'70s to 1990 - the era of identity politics and the changes witnessed in trans circles through these years; and the gender issues witnessed through the '90s and '00s.

Transgender History includes informative sidebars highlighting quotes from major texts and speeches in transgender history and brief biographies of key players, plus excerpts from transgender memoirs and discussion of treatments of transgenderism in popular culture.

something for everyone to learn

Amazing. Well researched and presented. As a history buff and an transman I can't say how much I appreciated every word of this book.

Excellent text, slightly disappointing performance

This is an excellent book, but the performer mispronounces a thing or two, including... Foucault's name. Oy.

If you're a performer, don't guess at how to pronounce things you don't know. Look it up!

loved it dearly. I recommend this to all.

A very interesting look into Transgender life threw the last 100 or so years. A real documentation of trans stories and the separation between my trans community and the United States at large and how we're trying to come together.

Impressive book

The amount of work that went into that book is tantalising.
On the other hand, it's almost too much to be able to follow as an audio book.
I had often the need to pause, just to breathe and consider what had just been said.
