Francis Saxover and Diana Brackley, two scientists investigating a rare lichen, discover it has a remarkable property: it retards the aging process. About the author: John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Benyon Harris was born in 1903, the son of a barrister. He tried a number of careers including farming, law, commercial art and advertising, and started writing short stories, intended for sale, in 1925. From 1930 to 1939 he wrote stories of various kinds under different names, almost exclusively for American publications, while also writing detective novels. During the war he was in the Civil Service and then the Army. In 1946 he went back to writing stories for publication in the USA and decided to try a modified form of science fiction, a form he called 'logical fantasy'.

expected more
I listened to quite a few of John Wyndham's books and this one is the only one I did not like. The concept of the story wasn't bad, but it just didn't grab me. It felt dated. I wasn't involved in any of the characters in it. Considering it's one of the shorter ones it took me longer to listen to.

Classic British Sci-Fi.
Fascinating premise - what happens when two scientists independantly discover a rare plant that slows down human ageing. Marvellously narrated by Vanessa Kirby,

More like a drama
this was more of a drama about access to the lichen than about the actual science fiction of the lichen.

Good story - great narration
The narration by Vanessa Kirby was really nice to listen to. Very calm but distinct voice.
The idea behind the story has been done several times before, but with the twists and turns throughout the story made it unique enough to be enjoyable.

not deep, but thought provoking
does not delve deeply into issues of science and religion, sustainability, equality or social justice, but it makes you think ... i enjoyed it, perhaps more than the Chrysalids

Science vs politics
I enjoyed listening to this book copyrighted in 1957 and still relevant today. It seems fresh and vigorous.. The use of PR is quite contemporary.
A very fine performance by Vanessa Kirby.
It is a novel of ideas although there is action too.

Hard to follow
Most of the time I had to guess who was talking. The story jumps from one scene to another one without any hint that it did.
