Publisher's Summary

When 11-year-old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession led James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD.

In 2011 James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004. Over the course of his investigation, he uncovered numerous important and shocking new clues about what may have happened to Maura but also found himself in increasingly dangerous situations with little regard for his own well-being.

As his quest to find Maura deepened, the case started taking a toll on his personal life, which began to spiral out of control. The result is an absorbing dual investigation of the complicated story of the all-American girl who went missing and James' own equally complicated true crime addiction.

James Renner's True Crime Addict is the story of his spellbinding investigation of the missing person case of Maura Murray, which has taken on a life of its own for armchair sleuths across the web. In the spirit of David Fincher's Zodiac, it is a fascinating look at a case that has eluded authorities and one man's obsessive quest for the answers.

Absolutely captivating

Loved this book. Superbly researched and documented, and cleverly presented. The author’s personal life is an integral part to the reader/listener connecting to the case in a real and human way. After all, most of us compare/contrast/connect our own issues and stories to tragedy and mystery, almost like we’re trying to insert ourselves into drama and headlines…I suppose in an attempt to feel…and an attempt to understand ourselves. It just made sense to me, and helped me understand the case better. After a while though, Renner’s personal story held the same place of importance to me. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself!

More Tell-All Than Investigative

Not much useable information offered on the Maura Murray missing case.

James Renner needed to channel his investigative reporter over his Shock & Awe Tell-All penchant, splashing subjective snippets and unfounded theories against proverbial walls to see what would stick with the Maura Murray community. He didn't come one step closer to finding answers, only more muddying the waters.

Although I sympathize with his personal and domestic travails, this was not the book in which to reveal them. It read as book padding and not helpful in either case. Maura Murray needed to be solely covered in a journalistic way.

Read if you want to get to better know James Renner.

Do NOT read for actionable Maura Murray facts.

Beyond Armchair Sluething

Many crimes capture my imagination and interest. I had not heard of this one until I read this book. The author is amazing. I love how he intertwines his own life with the search for truth in this unsolved mystery. He takes you down roads that most of us could not travel literally and figuratively. Awesome job hard to put down kudos to the author. I am definitely going to keep an eye out for other books by this writer.
Thank you James Renner

Good Story, Unsatisfying Ending

Overall a good book that is well researched and well written. The ending of the book is a little displeasing.

Brutally honest, fascinating, and some difficult parts. Incredible journey and a great book especially if you enjoy True Crime and the obsession to find answers

Can't get past his speech impendement!

If you can get past his speech impediment (with L) then it might be an ok book. I can't listen anymore.
