Publisher's Summary

This audiobook includes exclusive music by Kyd Miller Duchovny, the author's son

From the New York Times-best-selling author David Duchovny, an epic adventure that asks how we make sense of right and wrong in a world of extremes

For the past 20 years, Bronson Powers, former Hollywood stuntman and converted Mormon, has been homesteading deep in the uninhabited desert outside Joshua Tree with his three wives and 10 children. Bronson and his wives, Yalulah, Mary, and Jackie, have been raising their family away from the corruption and evil of the modern world. Their insular existence - controversial, difficult, but Edenic - is upended when the ambitious young developer Maya Abbadessa stumbles upon their land. Hoping to make a profit, she crafts a wager with the family that sets in motion a deadly chain of events.

Maya, threatening to report the family to social services, convinces them to enter three of their children into a nearby public school. Bronson and his wives agree that if Maya can prove that the kids do better in town than in their desert oasis, they will sell her a chunk of their priceless plot of land. Suddenly confronted with all the complications of the 21st century that they tried to keep out of their lives, the Powerses must reckon with their lifestyle as they try to save it.

Truly Like Lightning, David Duchovny’s fourth novel, is a heartbreaking meditation on family, religion, sex, greed, human nature, and the vanishing environment of an ancient desert.

Being new to audibles it was a surprise to be attracted to the flowing words of David . I truly was fixated on his writing.

Well researched and excellent story telling.

Great story and characters but terrible sound production

Duchovny’s book is a terrific story but the recording sounds like it was done on a cheap phone in a closet. Truly substandard recording quality that distracted from savouring and enjoying the book. Caveat emptor. PS I complained to Audible and was given no satisfaction. I doubt they even listened to the recording but if they did, they ought to have rejected it and insisted on a better effort.

Poor audio

The story was well read but it sounded like David was sitting in a box.
I think it should be re-recorded in a sound studio.
I enjoyed the story.

why do white dudes like saying racial slurs so much

This had so much potential and I really enjoyed the general plot/storyline/content! However, it was unfortunately sabotaged by its awful audio recording, pretentious pop culture references & Duchovny’s obsession with saying the n word. Seriously, the first time he said it was just as unnecessary (and abrasive) as the 10th.

I usually love his work but how David Duchovny managed to be simultaneously socially aware and so oblivious is completely beyond me.

Story pretty good

Story is good, but David is monotone and boring to listen too. Audio production is lousy, assume recording at home, should have invested in better recording gear and some sound baffling (echo!). Will look for a print version.
