Story
A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night, he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn't seen in years.
Publisher's Summary
Jonathon de Mountford’s visit to Merrychurch village to stay with his uncle Dominic gets off to a bad start when Dominic fails to appear at the railway station. But when Jonathon finds him dead in his study, apparently as the result of a fall, everything changes. For one thing, Jonathon is the next in line to inherit the manor house. For another, he’s not so sure it was an accident, and with the help of Mike Tattersall, the owner of the village pub, Jonathon sets out to prove his theory - if he can concentrate long enough without getting distracted by the handsome Mike.
They discover an increasingly long list of people who had reason to want Dominic dead. And when events take an unexpected turn, the amateur sleuths are left bewildered. It doesn’t help that the police inspector brought in to solve the case is the last person Mike wants to see, especially when they are told to keep their noses out of police business.

Enjoyed it!
This was a good story. The murder/mystery held my attention – so many potential murderers to choose from ; then there’s Mike, ex DI-turned-pub owner and the younger Jonathon – a world renowned photojournalist. Their romance unfolds over the course of the story, but is not the main focus; the melding of the mystery and romance made it an interesting story. Seb Yarrick is really good here - he has a good range for English accents – from Mike’s slight country burr to the more polished accent for Jonathon (and all the others in between). He has distinct voices for the characters, so I always knew who was talking. He definitely made this an easy, enjoyable listen, one I would listen to again.

Disappointed
I will preface this review by stating I don’t read many cozy mysteries, and I think that may be why I didn’t enjoy this book very much. If all cozy mysteries are like this book – amateur sleuths and civilians mucking up crime scenes and butting into an investigation – then I probably will avoid the genre in the future. Jonathan is a photographer from a rich, aristocratic family. He arrives in Merrychurch, a village in the English countryside, to visit his uncle Dominic. When Jonathan arrives at Merrychurch, he meets Mike, a medically retired police officer turned pub owner. Together, Mike and Jonathan discover Dominic’s dead body at the family estate, and from there the two of them spearhead their own investigation into the murder mystery. For a retired police officer and supposedly one of the best detective inspectors at his old police department, Mike’s actions were completely irresponsible. Interviewing and interrogating people, barging into crime scenes, all these actions a good defense attorney would use to help throw evidence out in court. It’s not good enough to figure out a mystery, but you have to preserve evidence and follow procedures so that it can be used in court. I could forgive Jonathan for not knowing this, but Mike should know better. I don’t blame DI Gorland for being pissed at these two, I would want to throw them in a jail cell just to get them to stop messing everything up. They were both a menace to the investigation. I don’t expect authors to be experts in police procedures, but if police procedures and investigations are the main theme of your book, I expect a certain level of realism. Nothing happens fast in a murder investigation, things have to be processed, people have to be consulted. The fact that this story seemed to have taken place all within a week, was strange. There was just so many questionable instances throughout this investigation, and honestly I would hate to be lawyer that would have to deal with this case in court. K.C. Wells is a good writer, and she does create fabulous characters, which was the saving grace of this book. I think if she focused more on the characters and their interactions with each other and less on the investigation procedures, the book would have been so much better. I wanted more romance between Jonathan and Mike. Overall, I was disappointed with the book, and I will be staying away from the cozy mystery genre altogether. The narration was well done and I enjoyed listening to Seb Yarrick's performance.

Love the mystery and narration!
I have read many kinds of books from this author, but this is the first mystery I have read by her. It was excellent. The narration was new to me too, but I thought it was great. Definitely can't wait for the next book in this series.

“Who done it” with some sweet romance
This was a classic “who done it” meets slow burn gay romance. No on screen steam but it was fantastic and not at all needed. There was clear chemistry and I loved them together and the storyline was fantastic with lots of twists and turns!

Tedious story, good narration
This story was so tedious and repetitive that I nearly gave up completely. Eventually, I skipped a handful of chapters and pick back up at the second to last chapter and discovered I had missed almost nothing of importance. I really can’t recommend this book even though the premise was good and the narration was pretty good, too. Ultimately, the book was a massive disappointment.

Okay mystery...
If you are looking for a gay “romance” with nothing more than a few kisses and an easy murder mystery, this is the book for you. The story was fine. The “connection” between the characters was not really explored beyond a few thoughts here and there, then they are together.

Good story. Good narration.
The mystery was interesting, the characters were engaging, and the setting was nicely constructed. I am looking forward to getting to know Merrychurch better in the following books. The narration was one of the reasons I started this series so I hope there will be more narrated books.
