AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
AN INSTANT USA TODAY AND INDIE BESTSELLER

Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, has always managed to save the day—but, in this powerful entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files, can he save himself?

One year. 365 days. Twelve months.

Harry Dresden has been through a lot, and so has his city. After Harry and his allies narrowly managed to save Chicago from being razed to the ground, everything is different—and it’s not just the current lack of electricity.

In the battle, Harry lost people he cared about. And that's the kind of loss that takes a toll. Harry being Harry, he’s doing his level best to help the city and his friends recover and rebuild. But it’s a heavy load, and he needs time.

But time is one thing Harry doesn’t have. Ghouls are prowling Chicago and taking out innocent civilians. Harry’s brother is dying, and Harry doesn’t know how to help him. And last but certainly not least, the Winter Queen of the Fae has allied with the White Court of vampires—and Harry’s been betrothed to the seductive, deadly vampire Lara Raith to seal the deal.

It's been a tough year. More than ever, the city needs Harry Dresden the wizard—but after loss and grief, is there enough left of Harry Dresden the man to rise to the challenge?

Praise for Jim Butcher and the Dresden Files

“Harry Dresden is a wholly original character in a wholly original world. Every book in the series is a great adventure.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris

“There are no words for how much I love the Dresden Files. I take them out and reread them when I am sad, or bored, or happy—or I happen to walk by one even though I have a lot of other things I should be doing. When a new one comes out, I plan on taking the day off. Superb.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs

“I’ve been reading the Dresden Files for more than a decade, and somehow every book gets better. It’s my favorite kind of story: delightful, deep, complicated, rare, and wonderful.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Patrick Rothfuss

“Jim Butcher has long proven he can juggle multiple threads of political intrigue, personal drama, and threat with a masterful use of action and tension....Harry’s hard-earned grit keeps his head above the magical waters and me on the edge of my seat.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison

“Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe.”—Entertainment Weekly

Once again, Jim Butcher shows that he is a master of his craft. The book, its plot, the dialogue, the characters, even the action scenes - all of them were extremely well written. Butcher adds in Harry's pontificating thoughts about life, his geek culture references, his wry sense of humour, and his very human heart. All of it brought to life by the superlative James Marsters, who is such a pleasure to listen to that I could listen to him read the phone book. He does voices and accents well, and I never once thought to myself that I wasn't sure who someone was from their voice alone.

All that being said, wow, this book was dark. The first chapter of the book was painful to read, and a full half of the book - no exaggeration - is about Harry dealing (often badly) with grief and loss. It's completely understandable after the last book, and it's well written, but it's also DARK. The whole book was dark, in fact, as we get to see the Winter Court's gloves come off and show just how manipulative Queen Mab can be, and we see the beginnings of another supernatural war on the horizon with the return of the Black Court. And, in signature Jim Butcher style, Harry saves the day, but with a Pyrrhic victory that leaves new long-term wounds - this time, with his brother's family. It all feels very real, very powerful, and very depressing. I love this series, but man, I wish that Jim could write a happy novel for once!

Well written but depressing

There need to be at least another 20 books to tell All of the stories I want to hear. I never want it to end

It was what I was expecting but still full of surprises and new twists - loved it

Jim Butcher has often been accused of being a bit cruel towards Harry Dresden as a character, and the previous book saw him getting torn up more than most. This one helps balance that out a bit while still providing plenty of action and intrigue under the excellent narration of Marsters

A bit of a breather

Harry struggles in the aftermath of Battlegrounds. Jim perfectly navigates greif, trauma, and total loss in this book. if you've made it this far into the series, I think you'll highly enjoy this much more intimate tale of Harry and he's year.

for a book that takes place over a year, surprisingly easy to follow

I usually don’t write reviews.

Between audible and my membership to 1 other platform and 2 separate libraries I read or listen to a little under 100 books a year.

Jim Butcher is one of 3 authors I pre-order. ‘12 Months’ was worth the wait.

Jim Butcher balances story through a nuanced exploration of grief and trauma after loss.

Having suffered a recent loss myself the descriptions felt eerily authentic.

I believe this book isn’t just a great story it’s a beautiful experience.

It’s yet another reason why I keep reading.
