À propos de cet audio

Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself.

When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. As with his other gigs, he sets rules for himself: no leaving the house for any reason, refrain from outside contact, and sleep during the day.

When Thomas Ruth, Felix's oldest friend and fellow horror film obsessive, joins him on the project, the two dance around a recent and unspeakably painful rough patch in their friendship, but eventually fall into their old rhythms of dark humor and movie trivia. That's when things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement. Felix realizes the book he's writing, and his very state of mind, is tilting from nonfiction into all-out horror, and the shocking climax answers a question that's been staring these men in the face all along: In Rotter House, who's haunting who?

J.W. Ocker offers a genre-defining story where two encyclopedic Horror Movie/Book fans lock themselves in a notoriously haunted mansion with ridiculous numbers of urban legends and reported sightings. The book is loaded with stereotypes.. but the author acknowledges where it's getting silly and actually embraces it. It's refreshing to see an author saying "I know this stuff is stupid + cliché.. let's go with it" (they intentionally use a Ouija *because* it's "expected", for example).
Niche writer 'Felix Allsey" confronts personal deficiencies/anxieties, friendship challenges - having invited lifelong friend 'Thomas Ruth' to share the endeavor - and the conversion from skeptic to believer. The book is as focused on character development as it is on jump scares. I liked the pacing of the book - philosophical/self-exploratory discussions alternating with macabre imagery and genuinely creepy, shiver-inducing encounters.

As to presentation: Reader Matt Godfrey was cast perfectly for the audiobook. His voice-acting is occasionally suspect, but his crisp diction & nerdish young-sounding timbre/cadence fit the neurotic, bookish, highly intelligent protagonist beautifully.

Altogether, 'Twelve Nights In Rotter House' was an absolute blast. The friend interaction breaks between stretches of don't-listen-in-the-dark events work wonderfully. I rate the book 9 stars out of 10. Spend the Credit.

[Note: Even though Ocher spends hour after hour ridiculing "Haunted House" clichés, the Climax is ridiculously trope-y]

Unapologetic Tropes & Personal Development.. but Legit Scary

enjoyed this thoroughly, nice take on the haunted house story. it felt grounded with its reminiscences of classic works of horror fiction and movies, moments of trivia and calling out tropes were carpet bombed at all the right moments.., helped me get through a few long days at work.
personally I thought that the narrator's voice matched well with the character's demeanor. decent!

surprised this was free. a gem worth digging for

Now I gotta say straight up, I loved this book! It is a little slow to start, but picks up fairly quickly. The setting, emotions, and characters stood out in vivid detail....and I really was not expecting that ending!

Great job to both the Author and Narrator, please keep working together for future novels.

unbelievably well narrated!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, notwithstanding the "racial cuckholding" reviews on goodreads - I'm not a person who automatically goes 'woke' when I'm reading/listening to a story.

The story is kind of slow for the first chapters, each one representing one night in Rotter House. I could see the main character's decline happening but had no idea of the twist at the end, which kind of freaked me out. All in all, if you're not going to focus on the race issue (I didn't see it - as far as I was concerned it was two life-long friends bantering), it's a creepy, slightly head-messing story. The narration was great in that I actually felt like it was someone telling of an experience.

Creepy AF

I loved this one so much. J W Acker has swiftly become my favourite in the horror genre. His spine-tinging prose flow with a purposeful pace, keeping the story going and your interest piqued.

I enjoyed the narration; it felt fitting with the main characters energy. I'm not saying anything requiring the plot, as it's too good to spoil. If you're a "go in blind and along for the ride" reader like me, you'll love this one!

A 5 Star read for spooky season!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Twisty, Spooky and Bone Chilling!

Started off a little slow but the build up was worth it. The narrator did a great job keeping his tone the same all the way through the book. This made all the bumps in the night even more chilling. The ending was definitely very much not what I was expecting. A fantastic listen.

Spine chilling

Foremost, this book is an exploration of the horror genre (and the troups) which just happens to be set inside a haunted house. If that premise intrigued you, you'll enjoy this story. The narrator does an awesome job, and some of the twists/turns genuinely surprised me.
