Publisher's Summary

A humanitarian mission into unfriendly stars. A training cruise under the watch of a fortified fleet base. The closing jaws of a trap years in the making.

It has been over a year since the UnArcana Worlds of the Protectorate of the Mage-King of Mars seceded, shattering the unity of the human race. The new Republic of Faith and Reason has raised new banners in defiance of the power of the Protectorate's Mage aristocracy.

Now, Hand Damien Montgomery commands a relief mission to a Republic world ravaged by famine. His humanitarian mission collides with a newborn military beginning to flex its muscles - and a newborn nation prepared to accept no violations of its sovereignty, regardless of their needs.

Elsewhere, disaster strikes the Nia Kriti Fleet Base as an earthquake shatters their only communication with the rest of the Protectorate. Officer-in-training Roslyn Chambers is in the middle of the recovery effort when she realizes Nia Kriti is under attack.

The Republic is done with peace. They are coming for the Protectorate - and they will see the fleets of Mars break!

The Saga Continues..

This installment in the 'Starship's Mage' series has much heavier emphasis on the Political/Space-Opera aspects of Glynn Stewart's vision while being lighter on the technothriller/action-driven side. Altogether it's another demonstration of the author's continued difficulty finding the right balance required to take the series stratospheric (to be fair, the central plot in this episode deals with a Rebellion and Civil War, but Stewart essentially abandons his "serial adventure" mandate). Fortunately, his descriptions of tactics and military encounters/space battles are characteristically excellent - making the listen worthwhile - but while the scene-to-scene and dramatic set-piece writing is fine (relatable, realistic, well-paced), the plot and character development are unimpressive.

Jeffrey Kafer's narration is still distinctly "average" (an odd mix of pleasant, professional, and over-serious), but notably improved in this recording: His monotone is less noticeable and I only had to accelerate his reading rate to 1.15X this time.

This was the first book in the series that I bought.. offered as a 'Daily Deal'.. and the $4.95 I paid for it was a good value - it's an entertaining 6.5/10 book. I am also glad I invested in buying the earlier books. This is a worthwhile series. But by book six it's getting repetitive and Stewart is pretty obviously stretching it out and attempting to cash in (as evidenced by adding a spinoff series). I'm moderately disappointed in him and won't be continuing with the 'Starship's Mage' storyline - although you would be justified in doing so.
