Story
When the star system of Legatus was preparing to secede from the Protectorate of the Mage-King of Mars, it was the secret agents of the Legatan Military Intelligence Directorate that laid the groundwork and fought the covert war to make it happen. Now, as the open conflict draws to a bloody stalemate, LMID has been broken. Their leader is dead, murdered by agents of the Republic they helped birth. Their surviving agents have scattered, following a final protocol that orders them to defect to the Protectorate. An old friend brings all of this to Damien Montgomery.

The pair are unprepared to govern but are thrust into the heart of Protectorate politics. Damien is grimly certain of one thing: when it comes to the deaths of Kings, he doesn’t believe in accidents.

Story
Sebastian Frost was a man with an interesting reputation. He’d killed 12 giants, eight heroes, a duke, and even a prince. But nobody ever talked about any of that. All they talked about was the deviant, disgusting, detestable Herald of Shalia that shamelessly laid with elves. That was because in the strange world based on game mechanics Frost found himself in, laying with elves was somehow treated like laying with animals. Naturally, they weren’t calling him Herald Frost the giant killer....

Publisher's Summary
A humanitarian mission into unfriendly stars. A training cruise under the watch of a fortified fleet base. The closing jaws of a trap years in the making.
It has been over a year since the UnArcana Worlds of the Protectorate of the Mage-King of Mars seceded, shattering the unity of the human race. The new Republic of Faith and Reason has raised new banners in defiance of the power of the Protectorate's Mage aristocracy.
Now, Hand Damien Montgomery commands a relief mission to a Republic world ravaged by famine. His humanitarian mission collides with a newborn military beginning to flex its muscles - and a newborn nation prepared to accept no violations of its sovereignty, regardless of their needs.
Elsewhere, disaster strikes the Nia Kriti Fleet Base as an earthquake shatters their only communication with the rest of the Protectorate. Officer-in-training Roslyn Chambers is in the middle of the recovery effort when she realizes Nia Kriti is under attack.
The Republic is done with peace. They are coming for the Protectorate - and they will see the fleets of Mars break!

Good Book, Not His Best
I enjoyed the book, though it was not his best story. Stewart's story line are very interesting but sometimes character development is shallow. I wish the author would take more time with that.

Another amazing read all the action and intrigue that I've come to expect from this author plus a crossover from a spin-off . I was wondering when that would happen considering these two series are in the same universe with characters from the first book . Anyway can't wait for the next book I'm ready for Damian to find out who's really behind this conspiracy and just who is this Winton person who seems to be playing both parties .

Not my favorite book
In my opinion, this book was a lot about Damien and his love life and his struggle to heal from his wounds from previous books. The battle scenes were minimal and more like thrown in just to add little action to this book. I was not pleased by this book at all. I have really enjoyed the previous books and have actually read them prior to reading this one just to get caught back up. So disappointed in this book. Looking forward to the next book and I hope Damian has recovered and gets on beating up with his magical powers.

BRILLIANT! I LOVE THIS SERIES .
Awesome. Glynn Stewart is a fantastic writer. His Starship Mage series is sooo good. His protagonist, Damian Montgomery is a so dynamic, a good leader and a hero. I hope this new chapter in the series will continue to grow. Jeffrey Kafer performed excellently as always and brought the characters to live. I am waiting anxiously for the next book to come out soon.
