Publisher's Summary

In the middle of the road, the child stood wearing a blue flannel nightie, her feet bare and dirt-splattered. Her blonde flyaway hair was golden, aglow from the fires that lit her up from behind. Stumbling over, Lizzie reached her side. The little girl's eyes were closed, her palms facing upwards. If she’d been in church, you would have thought she was praying.

September 1940, London

As the German Luftwaffe begin a terrifying bombing campaign that will come to be known as the Blitz, thousands are evacuated to safety. But Lizzie Mackenzie finds herself heading toward London.

She knows she must help in the war effort. But she has another reason for leaving the security of her Scottish village: the illegitimate child she gave up for adoption nearly five years before is somewhere in the city. And - as the bombs rain down - she will stop at nothing to find her and make sure her little girl is safe.

Then she finds herself trapped in a dark theatre during a bombing raid, where she meets Pilot Officer Jack Henson. Against all her instincts, she falls in love. But what chance is there for that love to flourish? Because if he discovers the secret shame of her past, he may never forgive her. And with Jack facing the enemy every day in the sky, and Lizzie’s job guiding pilots into battle - life and love has never felt so fragile.

Until a chance encounter with a little orphaned girl changes everything, forcing Lizzie to ask herself what truly matters. Because, in the darkest days of war, every life counts. And - when tragedy strikes - saving one child’s life might just give Lizzie a reason to survive....

An unforgettable story about sacrifice, love, and heartbreak set in World War Two London during the Blitz. If you liked All the Light We Cannot See, My Name Is Eva, and A Fire Sparkling, you will love Under a Sky on Fire.

Praise for Suzanne Kelman:

"Oh my goodness! Evocatively unsettling yet hauntingly beautiful.... the story is incredibly powerful.... I read this book with bated breath. I cried, I grieved and I hoped.... I was left both heartbroken and satisfied. Suzanne Kelman...has floored me with this book." (Robin Loves Reading)

Good Historical Romance

I expected more from this book. I expected more intrigue and suspense but instead it was a very predictable romance novel. It was set during WWII mostly in London during the Blitz. The description of the nightly raids were weak and more focus was on the romance going on during this time. I really liked the narrator though.

A book for women

During trying times women characteristically form lasting friendships. Such was the case during WWII when women from different parts of Great Britain took on diverse jobs generally occupied by men. The women met in London where they survived the Blitz. Relationships developed while others were lost. Children were born out of wedlock while abandoned youngsters were taken in. The story is interesting but the narration is wanting.
I suspect that more women than men would enjoy this book.

The narrator is incredible!

Since this book is about three women and WWII, I’m not really the target audience for it and consequently it just seemed so-so to me. But wow! I’d listen to it again just to hear Alison Campbell narrate. She is quite gifted. One of my favorite narrators and I listen to a lot of audible books.

OMG! SO GOOD

The narrator was fantastic. It amazed me how she can do so many accents. I have loved Suzanne Kelman's WWII novels. It makes me think how awful and sad it must have been to live during that time. It also makes me feel sad that my grandfather had to fight in that war.

Fabulous story of women's courage and Friendship.

This was a beautiful story and the narration was great. If you enjoy WWii stories, this is one of the best I have listened to.

Sweet story, but...

I loved her first book so much. I know every book cannot be the same, but this was just a little bit too much like a chick flick for me. It’s written well and you can definitely follow through with character development and I love the historical accuracy. The reader is one of the best. She is very skilled with accents and conveying emotion.

Couldn’t stop listening

Was wonderful even if so very sad at times. Made me really consider what it would have been like to live through the Blitz

Beautiful story and the best narration

The narration of this and all the voices and accents were so well done! I loved listening to this. Such a beautiful, sad, and uplifting story of the British spirit and what women went through during the war. Would definitely recommend this!

*10 stars!

Excellent narrator!
Finally, an author who knows how to end a story she wrapped it up so perfectly a lot of authors. We just end it and there was many places she could’ve, but she continued how so many of us which others would she wrapped it up so beautifully it makes it feel like it came to an end other stories they leave you hanging. I hate that this is one of the best I’ve ever read or listen to.

Friendship born in war

Three very different women for a bond in wartime England. How strong the women of England during the blitz has to be.
