Publisher's Summary

Anxiety is a survival skill gone haywire. It happens when our brain is working so hard to protect us that it forgets to notice that the danger has passed. It feels like choking, stifling, smothering, tingling, panicking - our brains cut out and we start to make bad decisions - all normal anxiety reactions.

Dr. Faith G. Harper, author of the best-selling Unf--k Your Brain and This is Your Brain on Depression packs a ton of knowledge and help into this practical manual. She helps us understand the history and science of anxiety, realize when it’s become a serious problem, know the difference between anxiety and other conditions, and cope with it in the moment as well as addressing it long term.

This audiobook is a lifesaver for panic attacks, breaking out of flight-fight-freeze responses, similar and co-occurring conditions, and for chronic anxiety. Straightforward, funny, kind, and judgment-free, it includes a wide range of tips, exercises, and medical interventions. It’s also good for people who aren’t burdened by daily anxiety but want to cope better with the tough life situations we all face. Listen to this audiobook and breathe!

Tried too hard.

The narrator/Author of the book tries too hard to add slang into the book to connect with the younger generation and even at times it is very cringy but the book as a whole is very well written and also very interesting and good. It added insight into my PTSD as well as got some tips on what makes it tick. That being said it is not an end-all book that will fix you but to help with your treatment it is pretty great.

Quick and interesting, but

the swearing isn’t always necessary. It’s short enough that I’d recommend people give it a try.

Great Strategies

This book was great to find new strategies, however, it would be better as a physical read rather than an audio read.

Good food for thoughts.

A lot of the information in this book is common knowledge or easily findable online, it is true, but isn't most information nowadays? This book does a very good job of making a connection between what is happening in the body to concrete strategies and things to actually get better.
I won't say it changed everything for me, but the act of reading this book was one of the good step I took in my recovery. I didn't feel talked down to, in fact I liked the way it had of bastardizing the more scientific passages. Some may find it cringe, but I think the tone is clearly set in the title, you can either roll with it or not.

This book was very much written by an academic perspective and it it very honest about it. There is a lot of information about medication and hard to access services, which some people may find helpful but are not realistic for most.
For the narrator, I liked her peppy voice but I don't understand a lot of the decisions that were made for the audiobook. There were exercises and I don't feel like they did a good job to make them accessible for audiobook listeners. And why read through the "breathing exercise" part instead of actually doing it? This book makes you sit though "Breath in for x seconds, hold of x seconds, exhale for x seconds" without actually pausing for it, for what feels like ages. Either do it so we can follow or skip though it. Definitely f*cked with my anxiety, but it's only one time at the end.

Reading this book was still a good decision for me. I recommend!

Great tips to cope with anxiety

Really took some great tools for my tool box. Meditation breathing “ thinking” point also the not making you your thought but by calling it out as a thought and not who you are. Also naming the anxiety to help with owning it and again not making you the anxiety it’s not who you are…
Thank you.

Terrible

She lost me at CIS. It’s derogatory. Also, mentioning all the medical issues that one’s anxiety symptoms could be caused by is not helpful. There are many other books for ancient out there that are far more helpful than this one. I understand now why it’s free.

Full of liberal garbage

“Indivíduals that menstruate” “structural racism” go back to school!
What a lost of my time this was, this was terrible.
I trust more in sushi from a gas station.
