Publisher's Summary

When Nigel Walden is 14, the Unhappenings begin. His first girlfriend disappears the day after their first kiss with no indication she ever existed. This retroactive change is the first of many only he seems to notice. Several years later, when Nigel is visited by two people from his future, he hopes they can explain why the past keeps rewriting itself around him. But the enigmatic young guide shares very little, and the haggard, incoherent, elderly version of himself is even less reliable. His search for answers takes him 52 years forward in time, where he finds himself stranded and alone. And then he meets Helen. Brilliant, hilarious, and beautiful, she captivates him. But Nigel's relationships always unhappen, and if they get close it could be fatal for her. Worse, according to the young guide, just by entering Helen's life, Nigel has already set into motion events that will have catastrophic consequences. In his efforts to reverse this, and to find a way to remain with Helen, he discovers the disturbing truth about the unhappenings and the role he and his future self have played all along.

Equal parts time travel adventure and tragic love story, Unhappenings is a tale of gravely bad choices and Nigel's struggle not to become what he sees in the preview of his worst self.

Great story and was hooked… but

Amazing story and thought provoking story. Only down side is that the main character seemed to be emotionally 13 throughout the whole book. Still finished it in 3 days though and worth a listen

I'm so touched 🥲

this is been one of the most touching audio books I've ever listened to. I don't know how the performer switched his voice and drew me into the story like he did. this story was excellent and something I'll never forget.

Worth the read!

Good story, like the narrator, worth your time for some light, but interesting enough reading.

Too long

I really enjoyed it for the most part, but by the time there was about 3 hours left to go, I lost focus and just wanted it to end.

Far far better then expected

Ya, it's not perfect, however if you like emotional twists, never knowing what is going to happen next and fantastic narration this is well worth trying.

The story moves along very well and keeps you want to keep listening

A very likeable time adventure

I left out the fifth star only because this wasn't an epic story that shook me (although, the performance got five, the narrator did a great job of keeping me in the story). This was an engaging time travel story that gave me reason to pause and kept me entertained throughout. The pace is quick but also slow. I definitely recommend this listen, especially if you have a couple of quiet days ahead and you're looking for a thoughtful and intriguing journey :)
