Story
There is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art. The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father’s Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.

Publisher's Summary
From the incomparable Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner, a powerful and revealing autobiography about race, sexuality, and art.
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in. At five years old he was sent to therapy to fix his effeminacy. He was endlessly bullied at school, sexually abused by his stepfather, and came of age in a world where simply being himself was a constant struggle.
Unprotected is the story of a singular artist in his own words. It is the story of a boy whose talent, courage, and desperate determination led him through countless hard times to where he is now; an icon whose refusal to back down in the face of adversity has made him an inspiration to millions. Porter is a multitalented, multifaceted treasure at the top of his game. A soaring, resonant story, full of new revelations, and shot through with his stunning wit, Unprotected will entertain and inspire.

Courage, Strength, Tenacity
I first saw Billy Porter on a television interview/talk show program. I was so taken by his personality and ability to speak his truth that I became an instant fan. I watched "Pose" and "Cinderella" and his performances were amazing and then I decided to purchase his book to hear his story. I truly admire his strength and fortitude which is necessary to achieve success. I am not a memer of the LGBTQ... community but to me that makes no difference. Billy Porter is an amazing human and a role model for anyone who wants to achieve their dreams and beyond. I enjoyed his book entirely.
Thank you Billy for all that you are. Truly amazing

WOW. Just wow!
I didn’t really know who Billy was before I started this; I knew him from a recent episode of ‘Who do you think you are’ and ‘Law and Order SVU’. But now I’m a huge fan. His story telling embodies his personality. I laughed and cried and sure wish I had his confidence and passion.
