Publisher's Summary

Elaina McCord's dream of being an FBI profiler is threatened by her very first case-investigating a string of murders near a Texas beach resort. The victims, all young women, were drugged and brutally murdered, their bodies abandoned in desolate marshland. Elaina's hunch - met with disbelief by local police - is that these are only the latest offerings from a serial killer who has been perfecting his art for years, growing bolder and more cunning with each strike.

True-crime writer Troy Stockton has a reputation as an irresistible playboy who gets his story at any cost. He's the last person Elaina should trust, let alone be attracted to. But right now Troy, along with the elite team of forensics experts known as the Tracers, is her only ally in a case that's turning dangerously personal. A killer is reaching out to Elaina, taunting her, letting her know how ruthless he is and how close he's getting. Now it's not just her career that's in jeopardy - it's her life...

Pronunciation errors

What made the experience of listening to Unspeakable the most enjoyable?

I liked the pace of the story and the mix of crime and romance story lines.

What aspect of Talmadge Ragan’s performance would you have changed?

Several of the scientific terms were pronounced incorrectly throughout the book. The narrator should have consulted with a scientist to learn the proper pronunciation of words such as "deoxyribonucleic acid" and "polymerase".

Good story, but the the performance was not good

If you could sum up Unspeakable in three words, what would they be?

Good plot - pretty satisfying.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Talmadge Ragan?

Someone who didn't ENUNCIATE her words so much. It was so distracting and irritating. She is also incredibly nasal and doesn't differentiate much between characters. Sometimes, characters have and lose an accent from one chapter to the next.

Enough with the enunciation, already!

I really like how the narrator reads characters, but in the non-dialogue passages, Ms. Ragan has a quirk that could drive a person crazy. In her efforts for clear enunciation, "He passed the" (or passages with similar structure) come out sounding like "he passed a-the". I had hoped that changing the speed would help. Nope.

It kills me to give the performance a low score, and it's really strange that this quirk wasn't evident in the first book in the series that the narrator performed.

I actually like the voice and the characterizations and this one little quirk isn't enough to cause me to shy away from further purchases of this narrator. It is, however, just irritating enough to push me into writing a review. My hope is that the narrator appreciates the feedback and adapts.

I'm a fan of the book series, and often do the audio of a book that I enjoyed reading. I do hope that Audible releases more in the series.

Story is decent...the narrator is terrible!

I don't know what happened in the editing room, but someone was asleep. I've never heard an audio production with so many mis-pronunciations in my life. Ms. Ragan's ability to recognize natural pauses in dialogue or mood shifts is terrible! I will definitely avoid books with her reading going forward. This is my second Laura Griffin novel and if I'm to continue reading her work I will have to go the traditional route and buy a hard copy book.

The plot line and action scenes were good. The main character was a little annoying but the story line moved along satisfactorily so I was able to overlook her constant, "I can do this all by myself" mantra.

If you're interested in the Tracer series, I highly recommend you read rather than listen to the audio book. It will be a much better experience.

Horrible Narrator!

The narrator of this book was horrible! I couldn't finish the book because the narration was so bad. I will make a note to never buy an audible book read by Talmadge Ragan again!

I hate giving bad reviews....

Loved the book, the story, the characters! I just had a problem with the narrator. She has a very unusual pronunciation pattern....? It sounded like she a mouth full of ice. Especially when a word ended and started with the same letter. I HATED giving bad reviews! I just thought it was an interesting choice for a narrator.
Loved the book!

Narrator pronunciations

Narrator says some weird things… pronounced fillets (referring to fish) as “fill-ETS”… not “fill-AY”. And certain words ending in -ed, she doubled the sound. Example… crossed… she says “cross-ded”. Very distracting!!!!

over-enunciation makes it a difficult listen

I spent a good amount of the time trying to figure out what word the narrator was trying to say. EVERY letter of every word was pronounced and the emphasis was in odd places. For example, every word that ended in "ed" had that part of the word broken out and emphasized. It was mentally challenging to translate what the narrator was saying into recognizable words. I've listened to this narrator before without this issue so hopefully it is a one-off. Other than that, the story was good.

Couldn’t listen after the first chapter

Narrator is awful. Sounds like she’s speaking with a wired jaw. Don’t know if the story is good because I can’t get past the narrator.

Good but

The story was good but I had difficulty staying focused because of the performers voice. This is one that might be better read not listened too
