Publisher's Summary

Rage is an unprecedented and intimate tour de force of new reporting on the Trump presidency facing a global pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest.

Woodward, the number-one international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.

In 17 on-the-record interviews with Woodward over seven volatile months - an utterly vivid window into Trump’s mind—the president provides a self-portrait that is part denial and part combative interchange mixed with surprising moments of doubt as he glimpses the perils in the presidency and what he calls the “dynamite behind every door".

At key decision points, Rage shows how Trump’s responses to the crises of 2020 were rooted in the instincts, habits and style he developed during his first three years as president.

Revisiting the earliest days of the Trump presidency, Rage reveals how Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats struggled to keep the country safe as the president dismantled any semblance of collegial national security decision making.

Rage draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand witnesses as well as participants’ notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents.

Woodward obtained 25 never-seen personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who describes the bond between the two leaders as out of a “fantasy film".

Trump insists to Woodward he will triumph over Covid-19 and the economic calamity. “Don’t worry about it, Bob. Okay?” Trump told the author in July. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll get to do another book. You’ll find I was right."

What the critics say

“Trump is the first candidate for president to launch an October surprise against himself. It’s as if Nixon sent the Nixon tapes to Woodward in an envelope by FedEx.” (Nick Confessore of the New York Times)

“Woodward’s prose offers readers that delicious, vicarious sense of being an insider, right there in the room with Bob, a witness to presidential sulks and boasts.” (Rosa Brooks, Washington Post)

“Even in a news landscape where it feels like nothing is shocking anymore, the first excerpts from the new Bob Woodward book still landed like a pair of hydrogen bombs.” (Vanity Fair)

an unbiased view of Trump's presidency

it is a long book to read or listen. It is clear, sometimes hard to believe, a inside view of Trump's thinking and acting.

The best book to understand Trump in the Whitehouse yet.

It’s a little repetitive at times, but that’s more a fault of Trump than it is anything else. Woodward’s latest will stun you and Petkoff does wonders in subtle vocal nuance to add believability to these unbelievable yet true to life events. Great book. Shocking. Frustrating. Mind blowing. Real.

In hindsight, this was prolicif

I'm not and American but I am Canadian and caring neighbour. While this does sounded like the Trump that I usually hear and read on social media I try to keep a open mind. The timing of this book couldn't be better. Bob Woodward did a fantastic job with what he had at the time! But the president contracting COVID-19 a week or so later after its release was unreal. Bob needs to write a follow-up.

A view into President Trump that is not partisan

The narration and pace of information was excellent. Facts presented and supported by background. There were some key elements like China’s response to the virus that are outrageous.... I believe the Author would not have included it without evidence. The human frailty of the president is made evident and I believe actually is a fair portrayal and shows he is just wrong about things.... but unable to learn or to improve. Lying is not just calculated but a habit that cannot be overcome as reality exists in his perspective only with self- glory being the only important factor. President Trump is the reason political parties should not be cults of personality... the “Dear Leader” platform should be rejected at all costs. The authors summation that the President was not the right man for the job is supported based on the content of the book.

Problem with listening

Rage stopped running at Chapter 44. Tried everything unsuccessfully. No problem with the other books

Just fantastic

This book was intriguing at first, then terrifying captivating. We have all lived through weird times in 2020 and this book really shows you what Trump went through emotionally as the pandemic went on. It also touches on racial justice and Woodward’s own reckoning with white privilege. 110% recommend to those who follow US politics and those who want to understand the last year or so of Trump’s presidency.

Riveting

I very much enjoyed this audiobook the reader did an exceptional job in portraying Donald Trump‘s vocal cadence. I think Woodward did a wonderful job Trying to get into the presidents head which appears to be a very cluttered place. Everything to Donald Trump has a price, it’s always all about the money. This was very evident when Woodward wasTrying to get Trump to understand the pain of the African-American population and I’ll Trump could understand was how he felt he had done better for them economically. The best president since Abraham Lincoln for black people, not!
