Publisher's Summary

On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park - and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of The Lake in the park. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes - removed with such precision, as if done by the careful hand of a surgeon - that have Dallas most alarmed.

As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers. Against her instincts, she accepts help from a psychic who offers one vision after another - each with shockingly accurate details of the murders. And when partner and friend Peabody is badly injured after escaping an attack, the stakes are raised. Are the eyes a symbol? A twisted religious ritual? A souvenir?

With help from her husband, Roarke, Dallas must uncover the killer's motivation before another vision becomes another nightmare.

Better than I remembered

I read the book when it first came out and I loved it. So many twists and turns. This story has personal moments of love and friendship and you get to see most of the recurring “characters.” Listening to it on audio was just as good as reading it. Great chapter of Eve’s adventures.

Interesting Ending

In this JD Robb mystery, Dallas and Peabody meet up with a psychic and a bodybuilder, which oddly enough makes for a pretty good mystery. Pay attention as you listen because Robb uses foreshadowing extremely well in this book. It's the best she's ever used that technique. The ending might be a surprise to readers. And, as always, Robb advances the personal lives of her characters just a little bit more. Although reading the series in order makes it a bit more enjoyable, Robb continues to do a nice job of filling in a new reader without using a lot of filler. It doesn't distract a tried and true reader, yet lets a new reader in on the past. Susan Erickson has also seemed to return 100% to the original voices of the characters, which is a welcome relief to the seasoned Robb listener.

If you have followed the series 1 of the best

I haven't really commented on J.D. Rob (Nora Roberts) "In Death" series this one is book 19. At this point you have gotten to know and get attached to many of the characters. Serial Killers are at best a horror that can turn anyone's stomach. In this story there are twists and an ending that will surprise, I really didn't see it coming. Maybe I was too caught up in the story. But I enjoyed this book in the series very much.
If you have enjoyed this series I recommend this one highly

I do the job!

That in itself is enough for her fans. Additionally this audio production with its well balanced and effective use of minor audio effects and talented narration pulls listeners in brings you center stage. The characters take form and come to life in your mind as they interact. Sure Dallas is the lead but each member of her cast will remind you of someone. Warning: This story is not for the faint of heart. Women will get this one. But all listeners will walk away cheering fist held high proclaiming this Lt. as their cop.

Didn't see that ending coming!!!!

I will say this is one of my favorites in this series. I love how much closer it brings Dallas and Peabody together. I also love seeing another side of Eve being brought out. I have read these books in order and would ask anyone interested in this series to do the same. By reading them in order you know each of the characters and see how they deepen with each book. To pick them up in any order you will lose the character development.

Best Peabody and Dallas

Best story yet and the relationship between Dallas and Peabody is made strong and real. I cried for them both during Peabody's ordeal. I recommend this audiobook to all.

Another Good Installment

I enjoyed this installment a lot. The story was well written and the mystery took several twists and turns. Eve and Roarke were their usual selves and Mavis and Leonardo both made a couple of appearances - which were well done. It's enjoyable watching Peabody's character develop as both a woman and a cop and I enjoyed both Feeny and McNab's contributions. I'm also enjoying Eve and Dr. Mira's evolving co-worker/mentor/friend/sustitute mother relationship. The "small" addittion of a paranormal element ("visions/psychic abilities) was well done too.

good, solid, typical Eve Dallas story

I've been looking for an "In Death" book that features Peabody more, because I'm getting really, really tired of Dallas. She's such a Suzie 1-note...every book is the same; Eve gets wigged out because some murder (no matter what the circumstances) throws her back into her traumatic childhood memories, she acts like Testosterone Trixie, kicking ass, guzzling coffee, acting as if she grew up on Mars & has never heard of things like parties, housewarming or baby shower gifts, etc, etc. The woman clearly pays no attention to anything that goes on around her (other than murder things & her traumatic childhood flashbacks). Roarke continues to love her madly, wildly, etc even tho she's a monumental pain in the neck, a constant grouch, always late, etc yada (that's why it's a romance novel; no matter how obnoxious she is, the world's richest, most gorgeous guy stays besotted with her. Riiiiight).

I find Peabody to be a much more interesting character, largely because not only is she nicer, she's more lifelike & complex, she grows & changes some as the books go by, she's funny, she's decent --simultaneously hard-nosed and caring.

Another gripe with this book; Eve spouts that old, idiotic, tired, untrue myth about hair growing after death. Why can't authors grow a brain & stop with the stupidity on that? It drives me nuts! Hair and fingernails DO NOT KEEP GROWING AFTER DEATH. It doesn't add anything to the plots I've encountered it in, other than to point up the stupidity of the author. (Tho this wasn't as bad as another book I listened to recently, where a character not only claimed the hair 'n' fingernails garbage, but also that both dead bodies and STEAKS AT THE GROCERY WERE ALIVE AT A CELLULAR LEVEL(!!!). Ye gods, I know science is like voodoo to some people, but how dumb does it get? Moronic, apparently.

Susan Erickson does her usual excellent job with the reading; she nicely & consistently walks the line between straight reading & acting, her pacing is always good, her pronunciation is almost 100% perfect. Sometimes the 'special effects' they do with the computer &/or droid voices get overdone, but that's not the reader's fault, & they don't get so bad they overwhelm the book.
