Publisher's Summary

With a serial rapist loose on the streets of Savannah, hotshot detective Ryne Robel needs answers, not the psychobabble head games of forensic profiler Abbie Phillips. Abbie must convince him that head games are exactly what this elusive suspect is all about.

Sex sells

If sex sells, THIS book is flying off the shelves!!
If I wanted a steamy sex story I would look in the harlequin romance section NOT thrillers/murder/mysteries section.
Apart from too much sex, I do like the story. There is quite a surprise ending-whodathunk!!!😳
The narration is ok but I did not like the portrayal of the crazy sister-too comic book stereotypical.

Enjoyed Most of the Book

The book was good, the narration was good but the depth and explanation of the intimate parts was a bit over the top and not necessary. For that reason, I only gave it 4 stars.

Narration was a slog

Story itself interesting. Certainly a twist at the end. Sex stuff definitely could do without. I can't say it added anything to the story. Narrator... now that was tough. Too monotone, reminded me of the teachers I sometimes had. They would read straight from the text book , with no inflection.

Enjoyable Book

Nice paced, dual story lines, good unexpected twist in the plot, good character development. Maybe more follow through with plot to carry intrigue

Dark Procedural. Incomprehensibly X-rated.

This book is not for the feint of heart. Kylie Brant paints an uncomfortably atmospheric picture - the "UnSub" is brutally psychopathic, the crimes are gory & traumatic, the setting is perpetually dismal (dank, rainy/oppressively humid), and relationships between investigators are invariably strained, distrustful, or outright hostile. Almost incongruously, the out-of-the-headlines familiarity of the atrocities make this horrible scenario disturbingly plausible. The tale is undeniably depressing.
Punctuating that mood, Brant finds a combative but nice balance between old-school instinctive gumshoeing (in the guise of Savannah Detective Ryne Robel) and modern crimefighting theory - victimology, exhaustive forensics, profiling (as personified by trained 'Mindhunter' Abbie Phillips). The end result is a strikingly authentic-sounding investigation that keeps readers/listeners guessing.

And then.. the story is spoiled with ill-fitting erotica. I wish Brant had abandoned the "Romantic" elements to the plot, because they feel tacked on.. and get incredibly explicit (e.g. "She started stroking his throbbing cock"). They actually detract from what is otherwise an" acceptable" modern Crime Thriller (Oh yeah, the climactic encounter is pretty stupid, too).

As to the presentation: the reading from Bronson Pinchot is typically professional. He reads a little too slowly (set playback at 1.15X for this one), but Pinchot's diction, timbre, and cadence are genuinely commendable. Less fortunately, his voice-acting is distinctly "average" and he reads with a notable monotone (impressively injecting emotion despite robotic delivery). Taken altogether, this is a quality (if unspectacular) performance.

When taking into consideration "capable" writing (passable vocabulary/prose, for example), I rate 'Waking Nightmare' worthy of a pedestrian 5 stars out of 10. If you can get it as a 'Plus' option (included with membership), it's worth a download - but if they ask for a Credit, seriously consider if the odd combination of glorifying love/lust/sex and challenging your faith in humanity is worth it.

Enthusiastic voice

The man doing impressions of The female characters voices is really cute and hilarious lol

Narrator

The story itself was awesome but the narrator should never do female voices. He had the strong main female character sounding whiny and pitiful. And her sisters voice was even worse. He did slightly better with the make characters. It would have been a better listen if he had just “read” the book.

What a cliché

I’m sorry, but I’m so tired of nearly every part of this book. The totally over done cop with a trouble past trope, the nonsense relationships that you just wish didn’t need to be a part of the book, the hunter becoming the hunted.. I feel like I’m listening to one of those “made for tv” movies that’s been so relentlessly overdone, I couldn’t even hang in long enough to find out the twist at the end.
