Publisher's Summary
The number one Sunday Times best seller
In the final reckoning, choose your side carefully....
The epic conclusion to the globally best-selling historical series, coming October 2020.
After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages. To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize.
To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion. Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced.
Only fate can decide the outcome. The epic story of how England was made concludes in War Lord, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series.

A conclusion of masterpiece
I have listened to all of Cornwell’s Last Kingdom Series now. And I must say, they are nothing short of a masterpiece. Every book transcends into the next and the next thereafter. Because of the weight behind his last 12 books, I was expecting “War Lord” to be no less than magnificent. My expectations were met in a vivid experience which Matt Bates brought to life.

This is book #13 of the Saxon Chronicles/Last Kingdom series, and the final book of that series. While I have hard copies of the prior 12 books this was so well narrated that I now want to aquire them as audiobooks as well. For those familiar with Cornwell's works there is a special treat near the end as the author himself narrates the Historical Note ( somthing found at the end of most of his works ). If you're wondering why I have the other 12 in hardcopy and this is my first audioversion, The hard copy does not release in Canada for 3 more weeks. And the story is so good i did not want to wait.

One of the best in the series
My favorite books in this series have been: Death of Kings (despite terrible narration), The Pagan Lord, and The Empty Throne and now I can easily add War Lord to my list of favorites in the series. I found War Lord to be one of the best in the series, so that makes for a wonderful conclusion to the story of Uhtred.
I love the title even more after finishing the book. It was not difficult to say goodbye to all the characters that I have come to love through the years and I don't have that dreaded sadness that comes to a series finale- I think because this book was such a satisfying conclusion to an epic story that I just want to start from the beginning and do it all again.
This book does have our usual oaths (questionable and steadfast), new characters and ones from the past, deception of people and plots, intrigue, and a hefty dose of all emotions. This book truly has it all.
The call backs to earlier characters and battles was just enough to make you realize that this is the end and of course these things would be going through Uhtred's mind especially at this stage in his life. I was not disappointed in the end or the epilogue - wonderful how the author made this come full circle. I often wondered how or if the author would tie back to the very beginning of the series and I was not disappointed.
I have to add that all the secondary characters that come to life throughout this series (and this book) plus all the laughter and tears I've shed during these 13 books makes this series my favorite and Uhtred my favorite character. Do not miss out on this series - highly entertaining and very enjoyable.

A Nice Bow...
This final installment of “The Last Kingdom” did a good job of tying up most of the story threads from prior books and out a nice bow on top. While certainly not one of the most compelling entry in the series, a mediocre Cornwell effort is still better than most. The only narration complaint I have is with the pronunciation of “seax”. The word is pronounced “sax” in English or very much like “sex” in French. If I had heard “SAY AX” one...more...time...

I have read all your books in this series. Great work, that has provided days of enjoyable entertainment. Being a modern norseman myself, having grown up in a landscape full of burial mounds for viking warriors, it is interesting to read the other side of the story. So Mr.Cornwell didn't give me the closure I expected from him in this series ending. I figured that Utred's son would have been speaking in the epilog like he did at the beginning of the empty throne. unless he is planning a new set of books following him. but I doubt that.
