Publisher's Summary
An achingly beautiful and wickedly funny story of female friendship, betrayal, and a mysterious disappearance, set in the changing landscape of San Francisco
Teenage Eulabee and her alluring best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy, oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know the ins and outs of the homes and beaches, Sea Cliff’s hidden corners and eccentric characters - as well as the swanky all-girls’ school they attend. Their lives move along uneventfully, with afternoon walks by the ocean and weekend sleepovers. Then everything changes. Eulabee and Maria Fabiola have a disagreement about what they did or didn’t witness on the way to school one morning, and this creates a schism in their friendship. The rupture is followed by Maria Fabiola’s sudden disappearance - a potential kidnapping that shakes the quiet community and threatens to expose unspoken truths.
Suspenseful and poignant, We Run the Tides is Vendela Vida’s masterpiece depiction of an inimitable place on the brink of radical transformation. Pre-tech boom San Francisco finds its mirror in the changing lives of the teenage girls at the center of this story of innocence lost, the pain of too much freedom, and the struggle to find one’s authentic self. Told with a gimlet eye and great warmth, We Run the Tides is both a gripping mystery and a tribute to the wonders of youth, in all its beauty and confusion.

Grabbed me..
My first read by this author, though a quick search reports she’s married to a favorite- Dave Eggers. I loved the protagonist, the evocative setting and the perspective of this time of girlhood. The ending came on a bit fast, not sure if that was just me, wishing for more. Well worth a listen - excellent narration.

who cares about lying boring 8th grade girls?
So I grew up in Sea Cliff, the decade before this book, when young girls were truly wild and we had a ton of fun. I found none of the characters in this book interesting - who wants to read about lying, snotty, unfriendly 8th grade girls anyways? The writing was good enough but the story left me so disappointed and I am sorry to hear these girls had such bad experiences. But they are dull and boring and certainly not like anyone I knew in Sea Cliff at that age. Guess I need to write my own book and tell it like it really was ...

Great start, then fell off a cliff
This started out well and really engaged me.
In the first two thirds of the book, there were several tantalizing clues and hints of things behind the scenes. These were just dropped and never explored or explained.
Then, the last third of the book went in an odd direction that I didn't care for. The girls are lying, entitled brats with no redeeming qualities.
The book ending was abrupt and unfulfilling, leaving the readers with unanswered questions. The epilogue didn't help resolve anything.

Not My Favorite
I was very disappointed in this book. It left too many questions unanswered. I’m not sure what the point was other than character studies. Not my favorite, for sure. That said, the narrator was excellent!

Excellent!
This novel will take you right back to 8th grade and the overly dramatic, somewhat sociopathic, nature of middle schoolers. The fact that it’s set in 1980s San Francisco is a major plus. I was drawn in from the very beginning by the rich prose that really made me feel as though I was experiencing all that the characters experienced. I loved Eulabee and her family. I loved the ending and so glad we got a glimpse of Eulabee and Maria Fabiola as adults. Loved this one, very enjoyable. Narration was excellent!

Delightful
This book featuring a 13 year old protagonist growing up on the Bay Area in San Francisco is whimsical, witty, and absolutely delightful. A funny and touching take on adolescence.

Good news bad news
Great story, I almost couldn’t finish though because the brat girl narration was unbearable. There seems to be a trend lately toward overly dramatic audible performances and weird pronunciations.

Interesting Story
First of all Marin Ireland is a fantastic narrator. The story was out of my normal reading routine and I got it on an impulse. Being from the San Francisco Bay area made the story very interesting. I highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys listening to an interesting story with a fantastic narrator!

So is growing up. Beautifully written. Highly recommend, especially to anyone who grew up in the bay area.
