I liked the story a lot. Troy is not my favorite voice, I was not in love with Meg S. voice either but she did amazing at having different pitches for the different characters.

It’s the stereotypical I’m a strong independent woman bad ass, but I’m actually weak but somehow I still survive and everything. Oh, and also I’m mad at this guy who’s totally the worst but also is really nice to me and loves me? And of course I need to survive in some kind of competition. I mean the story is fine. It’s predictable but if you’re into this genre, then you’re into it. The only real complaint I had was that the male narrator‘s voice is too distracting. I know why he chose the voice he chose in one case, but there are too many characters that just sound rough . It was so distracting that I found it difficult to listen to the book and wish I would’ve just gotten the physical

Stephen and Damon but add Gladiators and an unjust Emperor. The book has some predictable points but there are some twists that you don’t see coming.

I mean, if you like romantasy - there is a good chance you'll like this. I personally found it fairly predictable, the trials were lackluster and hard to visualize at times, and the FMC not being able to focus on anything besides the past when she is supposed to be well trained becomes grating - I get it at first, but it becomes pretty annoying, but is standard as we move through her growth arc.

Other than that we've got a few "toe curling" scenes that are pretty PG and meh and the romantasy reader can guess why.

I did not devour the book like I have others, but I would say that it was decent and I would continue the series. I might also be being overly critical as the hype around this book made me think it was going to be something unlike anything I'd ever read. For me, it did not live up to that hype.

But overall, it was a fun, listen great narration.
