À propos de cet audio

A millionaire English lord dreams of founding a Utopian community on a remote Pacific island. Among the 40-odd men and women selected for the project are a pestologist named Camilla and the narrator. Within hours of the group's arrival on the sunny isle, their radio has been destroyed. Within days, several members of the group are dead. Dream turns to nightmare as they discover the island is overrun by a species programmed to resist and dominate any invader.

This John Wyndham story tackles such disparate issues as geopolitical/colonial maneuvering, theoretical utopian civilization systems, and evolutionary mechanisms - all surrounding a narrative about an isolated mid-Pacific island. Much of the discussion is best-suited for classrooms/sitting rooms but the action-worthy aspects of the story are entertaining (the emergence of a new aggressive spider species that forms huge populations & attacks anyone who enters their ecosystem and the battle against them).
The book is well-written and thought-provoking but poorly paced and frankly pretty pedantic at times.

As to presentation: Keith Wickham is an above-average reader. True, some of his voice-acting is suspect, but his diction, timbre, and cadence are solidly professional and his pedagogical tone is pitch-perfect for the text. Audible Studios Inc. cast this project brilliantly.

Altogether, 'Web' merits 6 stars out of 10. If you can get the book off of the 'Plus' menu, you should do so. When it leaves the "included with your subscription" catalog, however, better options beckon for your Credit.

Thoughtful Book

It takes about a half hour to get into the story but it’s well worth the time. I like all of Wyndham’s novels and Web is good enough to re-read. It’s so very plausible. Super performance by Keith Wickham.

Science and political science meet

Wyndham is reliable for a well
crafted period sci-fi tale. Important to consider the publication date for context, eg. no cell phones or satelite GPS, smoking but no vaping.

Interesting premise

This story started slowly and didn't really grab me at first, but when it got going I was hooked, not to mention a little creeped out. Finishes with the classic Wyndham way.

Starts slow but builds up nicely

this book goes into a lot about the historics of an island, so I'm not sure how this fits into science fiction category..

very dry

I was initially delighted to stumble on a John Wyndham book I had not read. However, having finished it I was wondering when it was written and I see it was published 10 years after his death.

This definitely is not one of his best, and I suspect was drafted in the early 60s. The second chapter is huge, (the impacts of colonialism and nuclear testing on the islanders), and needed a good edit.

There are hints of his other work, but this is not one of his best. However, I did enjoy the experience of reading a "new to me" Wyndham book, and the narration was good.
