  • Summary

  • This deeply personal and supportive series offers listeners an honest and relatable insight into how some the UK's best-known celebrities have coped with mental health difficulties, ranging from OCD to insomnia, addiction to grief, and depression to anxiety.

Having experienced her own mental health difficulties, with depression and self-harm, Dame Kelly Holmes sets out to discover how other people cope. She joins each guest in a place that makes them feel good: taking a spin class with presenter Davina McCall, baking with comedian Catherine Bohart, and playing the bagpipes with journalist Alastair Campbell in his bathroom.

Each episode concludes with an expert insight from mental health professionals, Dr David Crepaz-Keay from the Mental Health Foundation and psychotherapist Owen O'Kane, including information about seeking professional help.

Dame Kelly's other guests include journalist Jon Ronson, author Philip Pullman, comedians Eddie Izzard, Felicity Ward and Rory Bremner, transgender rights activist Munroe Bergdorf and musician Amanda Palmer.

  • Ep. 1: Davina McCall
    Jan 25 2019

By the time TV presenter Davina McCall was 23 years old, she was addicted to heroin. Now she’s been clean for 27 years. In this show, Kelly hears about the pain and shame of addiction and the work that Davina did to rebuild her life.

Davina is well known for her confidence and positivity but at her lowest point she struggled to even look at herself in the mirror. Kelly and Davina both find exercise essential to their wellbeing, so they meet at their local fitness club after an intensive early morning spin class.

  • Ep. 2: Alastair Campbell
    Jan 25 2019

Journalist and former spin-doctor, Alastair Campbell, was Tony Blair’s right hand man. He opens up to Kelly about his experience of an alcohol-induced psychotic episode, and explains how his late brother’s schizophrenia motivated him to speak publicly about the importance of mental health. He invites Kelly into his home to show her how he relaxes - by playing the bagpipes in his bathroom.

  • Ep. 3: Catherine Bohart
    Jan 25 2019

Comedian Catherine Bohart was hospitalised for months in her early twenties whilst she underwent a life-saving treatment programme for OCD and Body Dysmorphia. She couldn’t imagine living to age 30.

As Catherine tells Kelly, there’s much more to OCD than handwashing and germ-phobia. Together, they put on their aprons and get the sprinkles out to decorate some cupcakes. For Catherine, baking is a therapeutic activity and a rare chance to escape from thoughts of perfectionism and anxiety.

Heartfelt

I really enjoyed these stories, I liked the honest interviews, I appreciated the swearing, the emotions... The honesty so much. It was a great listen, and makes a person think about their own life so much more.

Very Relatable and Enjoyable!

Firstly, I love listening to British speaking people. Secondly, I found the stories were very relatable with the individuals the author interviewed for each segment. I enjoyed the content as well as the predictable structure of the episodes. They began with the interview, and the interviewee would take the interviewer to their favourite place, so you got to hear about something they enjoyed and perhaps what helped get them through their mental health issues/journey. After the interview was complete she would thank the guest, then go on to speak with a mental health professional. Very enjoyable listen! Also, at the end of each episode it offered a website to go to as a resource.

Informational and Easy to Listen Podcast

Kelly Holmes is very inspirational and teaches you about mental health and awareness. She starts each episode in a place where the interviewee is happy, and she makes each conversation positive when talking about some not so happy topics.
