Publisher's Summary

This is a multicast program.

In one of the year's most anticipated thrillers #1 New York Times bestseller Sarah Pekkanen calls "Alex Finlay's best yet," What Have We Done is a tale about the lives we leave behind and the secrets we carry with us forever.

A stay-at-home mom with a past.

A has-been rock star with a habit.

A reality TV producer with a debt.

Three disparate lives.

One deadly secret.

Twenty five years ago, Jenna, Donnie, and Nico were the best of friends, having forged a bond through the abuse and neglect they endured as residents of Savior House, a group home for parentless teens. When the home was shut down—after the disappearance of several kids—the three were split up.

Though the trauma of their childhood has never left them, each went on to live accomplished—if troubled—lives. They haven’t seen one another since they were teens but now are reunited for a single haunting reason: someone is trying to kill them.

To survive, the group will have to revisit the nightmares of their childhoods and confront their shared past—a past that holds the secret to why someone wants them dead.

It’s a reunion none of them asked for . . . or wanted. But it may be the only way to save all their lives.

What Have We Done is both an edge-of-your seat thriller and a gut-wrenching coming-of-age story. And it cements Alex Finlay as one of the new leading voices in thrillers today.

Alex Finlay does it again!

Love everything by Alex Finlay. Great story, great narration, superb reveals (yes, plural) at the end. His location descriptions of Washington, DC and surrounding areas are spot on accurate - as I was listening, I knew exactly the place he was describing and could see it all unfolding. Another reviewer said they wished he could make new stories faster - I feel the exact same way. Keep it up, Mr Finlay - can’t wait for your next release!

A murky let down

I had just read the other two books by Alex Finlay and plowed through them and jumped right in to this one. I found it to be very hard to follow and not engaging enough to even keep me interested in what was going on with character as it constantly flipped back and forth in a nonsensical way. Huge let down in comparison to the other books. One thing that irritated me too was the lack of clarity on the age of the characters the narration at times made them seem much older. Just murky overall.

Good Story!

I enjoyed this book. I wish Finlay had delved into the backstory involving Savior House more. Lisa Wingate’s Before We Were Yours did an excellent job guiding the reader into the plight of a child in an abusive group home. There is a fine line on this topic. People struggle hearing about abuses towards children that can happen—yet, for this story in particular, I think a bit more description would’ve added another star. The stories told from life at Savior House were vague and didn’t allow me, as a reader, to connect to the depth of the trauma the characters felt.

The opening scene of the book was very interesting and had my attention. The way Finlay described “the boy with the soft heart” without using a name was very gripping. However, soon it was quite clear who this character was. I’d hoped for a little more guessing. There were plenty of red herrings in this book, but they were easy to spot. That’s ok—I don’t have to have a surprise ending with every book. The journey getting there is what I enjoy.

I am very satisfied that Finlay did NOT go the route of involving The Corporation with the overtired story of trying to kill their own (former) employee. In fact, the ending was most satisfactory!

The book was good. I’m excited to read more from Finlay.

Still a solid 4 stars

I love Alex Finlay. Every Last Fear is one of my top 10 favorite books of all time. This one took me a minute to get into, and to me there were too many characters to keep straight. But once I got into it I was all in. It's not an all time favorite, but it's a solid 4 stars. And the narration was great.

Another great story from Finlay

I just wish he would write them faster! He’s up there with Harlan Coben, Mike Omer and Peter Swanson now!

Great Story

Initially it was a little difficult to pull the threads to connect why the storylines were important but as the three different subplots were revealed the complex character development was brilliantly conveyed. For me an excellent story is even better if I can’t figure it out before the ending and I did not have a clue. There were some areas that were convoluted that could have been expanded to give more meaning/understanding to the past and the effects for the present. But overall it was easy to feel invested and intrigued.

Narration was excellent by all!!

not up to his typical quality

this book is sadly just not very good. performance is stellar but story and writing very poor. this author is usually fantastic but this was not good.....too cliché too violent, too many stereotypes, too much toxic masculinity even from the female characters. meh

My favorite author

I read no less than 100 books per year, 88 percent of those are mystery/thrillers. So upon reading Finland first novel and rating it 5 stars, I knew he would be a writer to watch out for, his second novel I read, five stars. This one, five stars. He is officially my favorite author. Something about the characters in each book, and how the story develops in a way like a young Stephen king. Alex Finlay is a phenomenal author!

Too much and not enough

This story could really benefit from the advice of Coco Chanel, “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” Maybe two or three things actually. There was just far too much going on at once (three totally distinct characters floating between current day and 25 years ago) for anything to really stick. Unless the book was significantly longer there was no way enough time could be given to any one storyline that would, at best, create some sort of emotional attachment and, at least, make it memorable.

The only saving grace (if you want to call it that) was that the actual plot was fairly juvenile and easy to follow. Anything more complicated would have been totally lost to the complete hodgepodge of characters and timelines. The whole story was nothing like anything this author has written before, and not in a good way.
