A disordered brain function can be the result of an unhealthy gut. The latter is caused by chemical imbalances triggered by an unhealthy diet. Chemical imbalances can disrupt how your digestive system works in absorbing the nutrients needed to boost your immunity and your brain. When this continues, the brain-gut connection will become toxic, resulting in a weak immune system and poor mental health. So, to help your kid overcome emotional and behavioral problems, you need to be mindful of their diet.

Story
Raising children is never an easy task; as many parents will tell you, it is a lifetime commitment and one that can sometimes be thankless. Now, raising a neurodivergent child makes parenting several times more challenging. Neurodivergence is the difference in brain function from what we consider standard or typical. A neurodivergent child shows different mental characteristics from what would be considered typical, called neurotypical. ODD and ADHD are two examples of neurodivergent disorders that are common among the population.

2018 Best Book Awards Winner in Parenting and Family
A 2018 Mom's Choice Book Award Winner
A veteran psychologist presents a proven road map to help ADHD kids succeed in school and life
You’ve read all the expert advice, but despite countless efforts to help your child cope better and stay on track, you’re still struggling with everyday issues like homework, chores, getting to soccer practice on time, and simply getting along without pushback and power struggles.
What if you could work with your child, motivating and engaging them in the process, to create positive change once and for all? In this insightful and practical book, veteran psychologist Sharon Saline shares the words and inner struggles of children and teens living with ADHD - and a blueprint for achieving lasting success by working together.
Based on more than 25 years of experience counseling young people and their families, Dr. Saline’s advice and real-world examples reveal how parents can shift the dynamic and truly help kids succeed. Topics include:
- Setting mutual goals that foster cooperation
- Easing academic struggles
- Tackling everyday challenges, from tantrums and backtalk to staying organized, building friendships, and more
With useful exercises and easy-to-remember techniques, you’ll discover a variety of practical strategies that really work, creating positive change that will last a lifetime.
What the critics say
“Short enough for a busy parent to actually read and use; utterly reliable and authoritative but never pedantic; wise, kind, and teeming with the chirping voices of children who have ADHD; this cornucopia of a book will feed you over and over again. Wonderfully written, infused with positive energy and solid information. All parents of children who have ADHD should buy it.” (Edward Hallowell, MD, best-selling author of Delivered from Distraction)
“We have many effective treatments and strategies to help kids with ADHD better manage daily life, but this book will provide that equally important intervention: feeling understood. I love how this book helps parents create a deeper relationship with their kids so that the whole family can thrive." (Ari Tuckman, PsyD, MBA, author of More Attention, Less Deficit and Understand Your Brain, Get More Done)
“When I give presentations for parents of children with ADHD and executive skill challenges, my message to them is Most of these kids turn out fine! This book is an excellent blueprint for parents who want to make that happen. Dr. Saline is a skilled therapist who has learned to listen to her clients. This book teaches us to do the same.” (Peg Dawson, EdD, psychologist and author of Smart but Scattered)

Thoughtful and Practical
I’m an ADHD mom with ADHD kids. I didn’t know I was ADHD until after my kids were diagnosed. A lifetime of struggle became clear. From the perspective of an undiagnosed child going through life to a parent of ADHD kiddos, I found this spot on and insightful in so many ways. It’s improved my life and my children’s lives with connection and understanding. Life’s not perfect and we continue our struggles, but we come through in a better way and have focus forward.

Bad parenting tips
There is good information about ADHD is this book, but that information is interspersed with encouragement to perform bad parenting tactics. The author mentions Alfie Khon as an admirable parenting expert, but recommends parents treat their ADHD child exactly how Kohn says you shouldn’t. Also, the narration for this book is horrible.

Great and practical advice
A very good book, with plenty of practical, easy to use advice.
Although I am an adult with ADHD, and the book is primarily written for children and families, I found the advice also relevant for myself and loved ones.
Knowledge is the best way to overcome personal challenges, and this book is a great way to gain clarity and identify strategies to implement in ones daily life.
