Publisher's Summary

Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, has spent years unraveling his family's tragic history. But the secrets of his past will come to light in this gripping new historical mystery from the USA Today best-selling author of What the Devil Knows.

March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

Sophie had been living in Paris under an assumed name as the mistress of Maréchal Alexandre McClellan, the scion of a noble Scottish Jacobite family that took refuge in France after the Forty-Five Rebellion. Once one of Napoleon's most trusted and successful generals, McClellan has now sworn allegiance to the Bourbons and is serving in the delegation negotiating on behalf of France at the Congress of Vienna. It doesn't take Sebastian long to realize that the French authorities have no interest in involving themselves in the murder of a notorious Englishwoman at such a delicate time.

And so, grieving and shattered by his mother's death, Sebastian takes it upon himself to hunt down her killer. But what he learns will not only shock him but could upend a hard-won world peace.

Great Story Poor Narration

I really wanted to give the new narrator a chance. I understand that its hard stepping into a role in the 17th book in a series. But honestly, her character voices all sound the same and her delivery sounds bored. It took me out of the story when emotionally charged events happened and she read it out blandly like a textbook.

Good story

The story was very enjoyable. I felt this was an important book in the series and had a hard time concentrating in the book because of the narrator’s voice and the performance. I would have sent the book back but the story was important in the development of the main character. .

Not my favourite

I have followed Sebastian and Hero From the beginning and this was really not my favourite story but I am still devoted to the series and to CS Harris
The narrator has a lovely voice however everything she says sounds like the end of a tragedy. The inflection of her voice goes constantly down making the mood wistful even when describing a cup of tea.

Disappointing

The inconsistent performance distracts from the narrative and character portrayal. The previous reader was much more suited to the characters.

Changing Narrators

I love this series but much prefer Davina Porters narration. The change made this story a challenge for me - good, but lacking.

What happened?

The story was good and have already read the book but was disappointed that the narrator was not Davina Porter. Jenny Sterling did a good job. However, she does not seem to be able to do as many voice ranges as Davina Porter.

Narrator ruined it for me

I wanted to like Jenny Sterlin's narration but her pacing, her odd pauses and the voice she used to portray Sebastian St. Cyr were beyond irritating. I did not recognize Sebastion in that whiny, and sometimes bored character. She could not do justice to the character of Lord Jarvis either and frankly, most of the voices grated. She did do a credible Hero. But, no more please.

Great Listen

I enjoyed this immensely. This series is one that I started in print but moved to audible a few books ago and gave also bought the earlier ones in audible to reread. For this one, I wish I had read it in print first. It takes place in a Paris and there are a lot of new characters, all of whom, of course, have French names and my old brain found it hard to keep them straight.

But a wonderful new escape into Sebastian and Hero’s complex world.
