Publisher's Summary

Why do we eat? It's more than just a hunger for more food, teaches Geneen Roth. Your relationship with food is a microcosm of your relationship to being alive, and to your beliefs about trust, pleasure, deprivation, and nourishment. Now, Roth offers listeners When Food Is Food & Love Is Love, a deeply spiritual culmination of her groundbreaking work since the best-selling Feeding the Hungry Heart. Here, she offers her first complete at-home course to break free from emotional eating through visualizations, guided eating and mindfulness meditations, and more. Roth helps us to understand the real issues of why we turn to food, and to experience freedom from dieting once and for all.

self help magic for eaters

by reminding myself of the 6 rules, and the little stories she shares, I was able to finally feel like I was in control of my mindless and emotional eating. It's a gem!

Like being a part of one of her lectures

I would have to disagree with the criticisms about Geneen Roth's delivery. I think she is trying to give listeners an experience similar to her workshops. She is talking as she does when she is delivering a lecture or leading a workshop. She is not telling a story, she is giving advice and offering solutions. She isn't reading her words, she is delivering her message. I really liked her style.

I get it this time!

I have been struggling with my weight since I was 9 yrs old. I have binged and dieted on an off for over 40 years. If you have a problem with binging, or emotional eating, this is a must read for you. I have been working with a weight loss program for a couple of years now and it just wasn't working anymore. This program is what I needed. Geneen's voice is kind and passionate. She is like an old friend who really cares about you and takes your hand to show you the way.

Good, but grating

While there's some good information here, it's almost completely overwhelmed by Roth's grating delivery. Her voice is shrill, and when she gets excited or emphasizes a point, she screeches. I wish I'd saved my money and just bought the hard copy of the book.

Good information

A prior reviewer used the term shrill, but that doesn't quite encapsulate this voice. Roth's delivery needs to get off the valium and get back on the amphetamines.

The unnatural pauses mid-sentance is what got me talking back to her saying, SPIT IT OUT... it seems like she's meandering without aim and not sure of her next word.

While I dont think of this as a wasted credit because the information is good, but it once again proves these authors egos have to get out of the equation when it comes to a PROFESSIONAL reading.

Great New Meditation Series

Her program has worked so well for me after years as a yoyo-dieter, always hungry, always wanting, always overweight, always on a new diet.

Our bodies DO talk to us (well, not if you are waiting for an actual vocal chorded 'Hi, this is your body!" They are very good at telling us when to eat, when we are full, and what to eat -- what our bodies are craving. We never listen! This program gets you in touch with that and does so in a compassionate non-judgemental way. I dropped to a comfortable 130 and stayed there for years, not straying (maybe up or down a pound or two) and eating whatever I wanted but only when i was hungry -- not to be social, not because I was bored, not because my boyfriend dumped me (okay maybe ice cream then . . . but I KNEW what I was doing and so it didn't go on for more than a night.) I went from always wanting all the forbidden foods to allowing myself to have them but only when i craved them, which frankly, became less and less as I listened to my body. My body actually craves many things I was not aware I liked -- eggs, cantaloup (hated cuz it was a diet food) and salads! It doesn't feel good on diet sodas (actually gives me headaches), or some types of sugars (corn syrup gives me a stomachache.)

Also, this is not about any one kind of eating issue, despite what some have said. It works just as well for the yoyo-dieter as it does for the anorexic. I have done the program for years and it is amazing.

I have to say that those who wrote about her voice? WHAAAAA? I expected some crazy voice. She is well-modulated and just fine. Inducts a bit of a meditative atmosphere.

Buying the ones I have already read to share with our family and buying the new one too. I recommend!

A Little Hokey - But Some Good Principles

I found the book very much like a new-agey therapy session - and a bit hokey in parts. But there are some good principles in there. Personally I liked her book 'Breaking free from emotional eating' much better. However if you can get over the new-agey stuff, the book is quite good.

Very Worthwhile

If you can get past her voice which is overly sweet, there is some very good information in here. It is a worthwhile book, with some useful information.

Misleading

This should have been titled "How not to be anorexic"

Good and true

I was really amazed at first I never taught I would like it but as I continued the book became better and so true. My only comment is not good when driving cause she is always asking you to meditate as close your eyes and I can't while driving now that was frustrating .

Better to listen in a quiet environment

Really enjoyed the content of this book. However I am used to listen my audiobooks while walking by. Kind of complicated with this one as there are many exercises and visualizations.
