Story
Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In this profound memoir, he turns his writing and his therapeutic eye on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare: He is 12 and is riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out, hoping to befriend her, "Hello Measles!" But in his dream, the girl's father makes Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her. For Yalom, this was the birth of empathy; he would not forget the lesson.

At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes' still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only 3,000 years ago and is still developing. Story
The best-known prose work by the winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature examines the moral and intellectual conflicts faced by men and women living under totalitarianism of the left or right. Written in the early 1950s, when Eastern Europe was in the grip of Stalinism and many Western intellectuals placed their hopes in the new order of the East, this classic work reveals in fascinating detail the often beguiling allure of totalitarian rule to people of all political beliefs and its frightening effects on the minds of those who embrace it.

Story
Perhaps one of the most revolutionary works of philosophy ever presented, The Phenomenology of Spirit is Hegel's 1807 work that is in numerous ways extraordinary. A myriad of topics are discussed, and explained in such a harmoniously complex way that the method has been termed Hegelian dialectic. Ultimately, the work as a whole is a remarkable study of the mind's growth from its direct awareness to scientific philosophy, proving to be a difficult yet highly influential and enduring work.

Publisher's Summary
In 19th-century Vienna, a drama of love, fate, and will is played out amid the intellectual ferment that defined the era.
Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him. When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure", Breuer never expects that he, too, will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient.
In When Nietzsche Wept, Irvin Yalom blends fact and fiction, atmosphere and suspense to unfold an unforgettable story about the redemptive power of friendship.

Truly fascinating, a wonderful book.
I've never read the book before, but I'm going to pick it up now, because of this audio book. What a wonderful story, and great narration. As someone who has had my own "Lou Salome" of sorts in my own life as well, who I used to bounce off so many ideas, this was a wonderful teaching tool to help me more come to terms that my idolizing of this woman is an expression of myself trying to avoid deeper issues that have needed addressing. The narration is fantastic, the story wonderful and profound and heart-wrenching, and I highly recommend this audiobook to everyone!

Amazing!
This is going into my list of personal favourites! An extremely captivating discussion of the psychology of obsession, and a testament to the transformative power of open and honest conversation not only with other but ourselves as well. It provided me with a much-needed recontextualization of Nietzsche’s work!

Superb Audiobook
Yalom is a gifted writer and very insightful about Freud, Nietzsche and Existential Therapy. As such, the novel was most appealing to me based on the historical aspects.
The narration is superb. Paul interpretation (with the right accent) of the story characters was a delight to listen.
Overall I great audio book. Highly recommend.
